Arcade VGA Error???
« on: October 09, 2003, 11:17:42 pm »
Hopefully one of you can help me out...

I just build a computer for a MAME cabinet I plan on building soon.  Heres the specs:

AMD 2500+ Barton Processor
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard (only has one AGP slot for video card)
512MB DDRAM
60GB Maxtor Harddrive
Ultimarc Arcade VGA Video Card (I was told by Andy at Ultimarc that this would be the only card I would need)

After building the system and I start it up... I get a black screen with a blue box that has a "Out of Scan Range" message.

Looking to the internet I found that this message is given when there is a problem with the Video Card.... anyone know what the problem is?   ???

sounds like to me... you plugged your PC monitor into the wrong port of the ARcdeVGA card... furthermore the top 30khz port won't do anything until you install the software/drivers ( IIRC anyways)

So... you'd be best off pluggin the arcade VGA card into an arcade monitor instead of "underdriving/underclocking" the specs of your PC monitor (hence the out of range message... in this case 15khz which is below the 30khz or so your PC monitor expects)

does that make sense?!

good luck!

PS you could always email andy directly for support if your issue is more complex/require more troubleshooting...  *shrug*

Ok well now I dont know if I have the correct cable to connect the card to the monitor.  The monitor is a unknown brand 27" CGA.
With the Arcage VGA card, I purchased a VGA Breakout cable (has the ends already exposed for a connection with the monitor.  Marked

R

V

Is this the right cable?  If so what do each of these connect to.  Or did I need to purchase the "Arcade Monitor Video Amplifier"?

I really couldnt find a definite answer on Ultimarcs website.  I also tried to email Andy, but everytime I do the email comes back :(

Thanks!

That's the right cable, wire them as follows:

R  Red
G  Green
B  Blue
H  Horizontal Sync }wire together for composite sync
V  Vertical Sync      }
-  Ground (looks like 'I')
+  +5v (blank this off)

Hope that helps...
