Netbook / Notebook
« on: September 19, 2012, 03:17:35 pm »
I am toying with the idea of using a notebook for the basis of a small cabinet. Re-wiring the power button is not that big of a deal, the only thing that I am searching for, with no luck, is a cord that would go from the power port on the back of the notebook to the side of my case so that I can just plug in the power brick from the out side. Here is what I am talking about.

There are different sizes of power connectors used by notebook manufacturers.

What specific manufacturer/model notebook are you using?

Any reason you don't just mount the power brick in the cab, with the power input port backed up to a hole in the back for the power cord?

Why don't you buy an extension cord and just leave the connector outside the cab. You can have your power brick outside and the extension cord goes inside the cab to the netbook.

I have made several bartops using laptops, I de-cassed them and just soldered two wires to the motherboard where the power brick plugs in. Then put a barrel plug on the outside of the cab (soldered to the newly installed wires) for the power brick to plug into.

Hopefully this makes sense and is what you were looking for, just woke from a "power" nap.  Good luck with building.

It's a Dell XT2 notebook with a warranty left so I did not really want to hack up the notebook that bad. Basically an extension cord that Brained mention is what I was really looking for. Need to track one down for the Dell now.

As for putting the brick inside, it's going to be a small cabinet and if I can avoid putting it in that would be better. If it was a larger sized cab, I would have put in a mini-itx and called it a day, lol.

As always, thanks for the information guys, I knew I would not be let down!
