Japanese coin mechs...

Hey guys, I live in Australia and have been having a hard time trying to buy a coin door for my particular cab. It's a basic over/under style 2 coin door, and I already have the coinbox and bottom door assembly from ebay, and now i'm simply looking for the top door with mechs.

... God I wish I lived in America when it comes to things like this, they're all over ebay at such cheap prices!! How much do you think shipping would cost for something like this to Australia from America? I could always buy aussie coin mechs I suppose to fit them.

Anyway, I went into the local arcade suppliers (Dickinsons Amusements for your Aussies) the other day to see if they had what I wanted. Low and behold, they did, exactly what I wanted with mechs and all. The guy rang his boss to see if he could get a quote for the price to sell it at, and his boss told him not to sell it on account it was their last one... UGH! I finally find one and I can't get it....

Anyway, afterwards I emailed every interstate Australian arcade suppliers I could find on a google search, and outlined what I wanted.

From the two replies I recieved, one only sold new coin doors... ($275! Yeewouchh!) but the other one had second hand single doors available, pretty much exactly what I wanted at $60 each.

But, and there's always a catch... they're Japanese coin doors.

The arcade suppliers assured me that I can modify it pretty easily to accept Australian coins, but I will probably also need to attatch new hinges or modify the existing ones. (which I guess is possible too) Here's the response I recieved.

we have some second hand units available ( door only ) for $60 ea,
These are presently set up for  Japanese yen, but can be modified to take our currency ( a bit of filing, and label changing in the inserts )
These would be the same spacing for the door hole, but the positioning of the holes in the hinges would need to be modified as well,
as there are heaps of different manufacturers of these doors,
and each is a just that little bit different,

So what i'd like to know, besides if there's anywhere else in Adelaide or Australia I could get them... would it be easy to convert these? and what part would I have to file? just the coin inserts? and how hard would it be to change the hinging?

Sorry to keep topping this, but I really need an answer because I have a deadline on this cabinet (it's a school project) and it ends in a few weeks, and I wanted to have a fully working door by then.

If there isn't any response this time around i'll simply let it die, and I'll decide whether to risk buying this door or not.

Not sure what the guy means about the hinges, unless he means the doors aren't the ones that belong to the frame.  But either way, it probably wouldn't take much work with a drill (and maybe a threading tap) to fix.

As far as the mechs, not sure what the size of either Australian coinage or Japanese coinage is, so I would have to take the guys word that they are close enough to just file the mechs so they will work.  I have done several conversions from US quarter mechs to .984 tokens in the past and its just a matter of dropping in the coin you want to work and seeing where it gets stuck.  Some coin mechs are easier to work with than others.  Some can be adjusted with screws, some are metal and will require filing and bending, some are plastic and can be trimmed with a good exacto knife.  This site has some ideas of where to start.

Its really hard to say with out seeing the mechs.  One thing you could do is, if the mechs just can't be converted, just pull them out and run a tube of sorts from the coin insert to the coin switch.  You won't get the sound of the coin going through the mech but you will get the coin door functionality until you can afford to get some Australian coin mechs (http://www.happcontrols.com/coindoors/42303900.htm).

If you are having a hard time getting a door in Australia, then get this one and just work with what you have.  Good luck.
