Its just an expensive overly complicated dowel  but a great little idea all the same.

Neat idea.  It's like a magnetized version of what they use in flat-pack desks and such.  I really like the part where the drill says, "Rrrr" and the dowel thingy says, "click click."

That's pretty badass, I wonder how tight it can get that bolt though.  It would also require absolute precision when installing either side, else it would bind.  Still cool though.

For the year 2050 lets put a tuned-coil, a miniature servo, and a wood screw inside the longer piece and eliminate the smaller 2nd piece.

I don't think so... The strength of the magnetic filed will be the determining factor.  The drill will just keep spining the magnet.  One problem I can see with this system will be corosion in the screw mechanisim.  Say you put the parts together as tight as possible... as time passes the metal parts (now inside the wood) will lose lubrication and begin to corrode.  Can they gurantee that they will be able to reverse the screw out considering that even more force will be necessary because of corrosion?  If not, what you have here is a nifty 1 way solution that is no cleaner and more expensice than a 10 cent dowel.   Just sayin..... Still cool though!

Yeah, just don't build anything permanent-ish, like the handrail in the video, or a built-in bookcase. When the product disappears from the marketplace due to being ridiculously overcomplicated...

... the person who buys your house down the road is going to have a fit trying to figure it out
