MVS-4-25 rebuild/mame CP ideas
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:22:48 pm »
I was able to snag this gutted Neo-Geo MVS-4-25 version3 for free off Craigslist.  I'm planning to MAME it as I don't have any Neo-Geo hardware and likely don't have the cash to get the original gear.

So on to the MAMEing.  I've started to build a CP box out of 5/8 MDF and 1/4 plywood.  I'm planning to flush top mount the joysticks in the 5/8 MDF and then cover em with the 1/4" ply.  Based on other projects I've seen on here that struck me as the mounting I liked the best.

As you can see there is a little repair on the cabinet right side that needs to be done.
Other than the repair area I plan to leave the original vinyl red sides alone and touch up the black base with paint.  New T-molding will be added all around.

I've been working on some ideas for a Neo-Geoesque layout based on several of the projects and links I found here on the forums.  So far this is my plan:

I'd like comments/suggestions for improvement.

Great score on the cab.  :applaud:

Looks like you have a good starting plan for your build.

What admin buttons are you planning on using?

Looks like you have spots for the usual P1 Start, P2 Start, Esc, Pause, Enter, Tab.

Will you put in a coin door or are two of the admin buttons supposed to be for coin?

If two of the admin buttons are for coin, why aren't they closer to the start buttons?

I'm thinking   Shazam, escape, tab, pause.

Tho is doesn't show that way on the image I posted I'll likely make the admin buttons on the upper right black so they somewhat blend into the black area of the Neo-Geo CP design.

Not quite sure if I'll try find a real/working coin door or just install a black panel behind the coin door area.

I do intend to put coin entry in the coin door area.

If I can score a coin door with working mechs then I'd love to have it use tokens.  Otherwise Novagem.

Which functions do you plan on using the Shazaaam! for?

The reason I ask is that most people fall into one of two groups:
--"A coin door and 2 or 3 admin buttons looks like a Real Cab and any more than 5 admin buttons is a Frankenpanel abomination."
--"How could anyone want less than 8 dedicated admin buttons?"

Your plan seems to be closest to the second group, and --depending on the software/configuration-- may work perfectly.

Will you have a "cheat sheet" on your bezel for shifted functions and the unmarked black buttons?

Good food for thought there.

My current machine has 4 admin buttons in addition to P1 and P2.  For the longest time they were Shazaam!, coin1, coin2, pause.
I used a cheat sheet between the glass and bezel to help others know how to get in and out of games, switch menus, etc.

I recently added the novagem buttons to my coin door on that machine and I've been playing with various combinations of functions on the now "extra" two buttons.

I will have to see if I can get down to just a couple without the Shazaam!.  The shifted buttons have been really nice for me to be able to adjust favorites, etc without pulling out a keyboard.   Out of curiosity, what admin buttons do you have/use?

My current setup is a portable/modular that works with almost any software, but the mouse and coin buttons don't necessarily translate well to a dedicated cab.

Depending on your choice of software and configuration, you may not need the Enter button.   :dunno

I use inserts printed on transparency material in 12v LED buttons powered by 5v from USB.  Looks good lit or unlit.  The stoplight + blue color scheme works well for my setup.  YMMV.

Just a quick follow-up.  I think you have me convinced to try and go with the P1, MENU, P2 config for the top row.  It should be enough to run things and will keep it somewhat more Neo-Geo looking.  I haven't added those 3 holes for controls yet. but the rest of the buttons and the top holes for the joysticks went in last night.  Will move the rest of this to the project room.
