7th Button
« on: August 31, 2012, 02:42:28 pm »
I have seen lots of control panels with the standard 6 buttons, and then a 7th one below and to the left.

I can't for the life of me figure it out, as no game I know needs 7 buttons...

please, give me a clue?

thanks

Check out the NEO GEO button layout and MK 3.  That's why I did mine but now I'm thinking that 7th button is a little too far to reach.

I've been browsing and researching for months, however not quite sure what neogeo is, will have to google it later.

I thought MK had 5 buttons in a cross, so not sure how the 7th helps...

You've given me some search terms to start under, so thanks!

MK 3 adds a RUN button below and to the left of the LOW PUNCH

Black IL concave buttons
Clear Translucent IL concave buttons
IL-lumination RGB LEDs

All from Paradise Arcade Shop. I'm using Ultimarc's PACLED64 to control the LEDs. Here's a good example of how I modified the buttons and RGB LEDs: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,113154.msg1201658.html#msg1201658

Made the mistake of watching that in the kitchen.  At first the family was making fun of me.  By the end of the video they were singing along.   ;D

Totally off-topic but then they made me watch this -

I need to add it to my ShoRyuKade, neogeo feels weird on a SF layout

To be honest I have only ever played one Neo-Geo cab. Never got to frequent arcades when I was younger (I am 24 by the way), mostly played the arcade cabinets at the convenience store down the street from my old house. Luckily the owner loved replacing them with different games every 4 - 6 months or so (also chuck-e-cheeses). Anyways, most of them were a layout like the ones I keep building.

The  "new-gen-ers"  must have Gorilla hands.

I cant imagine being able to easily, if at all... hit all three top or bottom buttons at once, on Nep's  CP.

Meh, my glove size is medium. My layout is atypical, in that I made it based on where my fingers naturally lay when I place my hand on a table. My index, middle, and ring lay on the top three buttons and my thumb falls into place on the 7th button. Just have a long middle finger. Besides, when do you need to hit all three buttons at once? For a special move? I wouldn't want to unintentionally hit that. It's like typing on a keyboard... when the hell do you hit three keys at once? Ctrl+Alt+Delete... kind of hard to hit that unintentionally.

I know it may seem obvious to you guys, but not to me, a lot of information out there assumes quite a bit of knowledge.

So i get that MK had 5 buttons in a cross + 1, which equals 6.  so still not sure why the 7th button?

Is it simply because you are used to hitting run with your thumb?  As someone who only played MK on the Sega console, that would not bother me so I can stick with the 6.

thanks

Dave

It's not really as much "used to" as it is that's how the layout was designed for the game. As with everything in this hobby, it's all personal preference.

This is basically the conclusion that I came to. First time I did my control panel was 7 button, when I redid it I said screw it and went with the classic "street fighter" layout with only 6 buttons. This was at a time when me and 3 or so of my friends were playing a ton of mortal kombat and none of them seemed to mind, simply moved the run up to the bottom middle.

Cool, i think on the basis of keeping it simple I will do the same.

BTW: as you've done that, how does one permanently change the standard key layout?  I know you can do it by hitting tab and "input (this game)", however if one doesn't want to do that every time?

thanks guys for the answers so far, and great vid.  i checked 2.20 and I am alive, however my parents never let me go to the arcades.  Now I am nearly 40 I am making up for it  ;D

Set everything up in Input (General).  Whenever you load a game for the first time it will default the controls with those settings.  If you've already played, it won't use the General settings.   Clear out the files in your CFG folder and that should solve the problem even on games you've played.
