Replace old IL Joystick (Diagonals not working)
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:52:37 pm »
Hi, I have this IL joystick, but in SF2 I cant do diagonals, jump forward or backwards is very hard and ken or ryu's hadoken nearly impossible. But in MK for example, I can do the diagonals with no problem.
Is it something wrong with the joystick? Or I just need a new one?
If so, can you advice me on a not very expensive one? thanx (I need to keep the jamma interface.)

If you can hit the diagonals in MK, it means the switches are working.

You might POSSIBLY want to try tuning the switches like this thread to make the diagonals easier.

Do you mean bending the small irons in the switches towards the joystick?
I thought on that but wasnt quite sure would make a difference.

Yes, a bend of a few degrees after the point where it touches the small white nub, just like RandyT describes.

Well, i've bended them, no luck... Ryu still performs no Hadouken.
Here's how they are:

I believe that the actual hole in the CP is not allowing the joystick to reach the limits of its motion, I'll try centering it better, could that be it?

Maybe a long shot but could it be something in the game control settings for mame.
It just seems weird that the diags work in one game but not another. How are they in something like Robotron?

Umm, the good news is the switch on the upper right is OK.  The other three are bent too close to the base, and may cause the switches to bind as the lever arm presses the white nub at an angle.

Green zone = OK to bend
Red zone = Avoid bending

I believe that the actual hole in the CP is not allowing the joystick to reach the limits of its motion, I'll try centering it better, could that be it?
That could be it.

Restrictor plates work as well on the top as they do on the bottom.

The diagonals work, but are so hard to do... And the fireballs are very hard to make. Shoryuken? I've made one in 1 gazillion tryes. I'm using an XBOX with Coinops 4, I'll try to remap the keys, but I think that I cant remap the directional buttons...
I now understand why Sub zero shoots his Ice in every try, because the magic is Down, forward, punch, and the hadouken is down, down+forward, forward, punch.

My arcade conversion is getting so hard  :banghead:  :embarassed:

The diagonals work, but are so hard to do...

Redo the lever arms so the bends are in the green and the diagonals will become easier.  Bends in the red don't help much -- if any -- and they may hinder diagonals because of binding.

When I dropped the LS-32 switch upgrade into the import flight stick from paradise, some of the diagonals would not hit at all.  5-7 degrees of bend in the beginning of the green zone and now they hit every time.

I've done everything Scott, but fireballs just wont go, i've bended the edges of the switch, a bit, some more... and no fireballs come out.
So frustrating :(

did you address this issue? it looks like you have the stick out, why not temp mount it on something with a large hole and test it that way?

The stick that is not assembled on those pictures is a spare one I have, I've tested in Robotron the diagonals work, but in any Street Fighter I cant do any special move with diagonals in it. Plus I've tested in player 2 whose stick is well centered and its the same story. I'm starting to believe that the sticks just aren't so good, and they must be some 10 years old. Oddly they resemble the Happ super joystick, so the owners of those sticks should be complaining the same...
I changed the restrictors on top and bottom of joystick with all possible combinations and still no special moves.
Do you any recomendation for a good stick to buy?
Thankx :(

I've tested in Robotron the diagonals work

If the diagonals work OK in even one game, it means the switches are functioning properly and the actuator is pressing 2 switches at a time.  This rules out a hardware problem with the joystick, but not necessarily with the wiring/board.

Are you using a multi-jamma switching setup (multiple game boards) or an X-in-1 setup (1 game board with X games)?
(X-in-1 board rules out hardware/wiring, but not software/firmware problems)

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure there isn't some other configuration issue (DIP switch or software setting) that isn't the cause?

If it's not hardware . . . and its not software . . . . ::)

Scott

I'm using an Xtimer to Jamma board. An xbox with coinops4 running.
This one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XBOX-console-Time-control-timer-board-for-XBOX-console-to-Jamma-cabinet-game-/271004944830?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item3f192749be#ht_10335wt_1344

And I'm starting to believe that the joystick is just plain crap... I see that lots of people prefer the IL Eurostick to this IL Compact Joystick that I have...
I'm seeing good reviews also on the sanwa JLF, but dont see how to conect that stick with a jamma with that kind of interface...

If you are looking at other sticks, I like Happ competitions for fighters and they're cheap.
The problem with a jlf is that its a smaller base but as far as hook up goes, its still just 4 switches but it uses a special harness. but those wires are one common and then the 4 directionals.

Still it seems that you may have other problems beyond the stick if diags are working for some games. but I no experience with mame on an xbox

I think the problem is really how reliable the sticks are hitting the diagonals. And these dont seem great. Do you think a jlf stick will fit on a CP with about 1 inch thick?
And adapting the jlp to the jamma wiring will be hard?

A jlfs shaft will be too short for 1" thick and the base is different then what you currently have mounted. you would probably have to top mount the jlf.

I love sanwa sticks but I think you may wanna go with a Happ competition unless you anna make big changes to your cp
