Speaker Options for jukebox
« on: July 24, 2012, 02:24:47 am »
I'm building a touchscreen jukebox and have spent way too long going around in circles with how to hook up speakers:

Unfortunately bookshelf speakers are not an option due to a curved surface in the design.

Started off looking at PC speakers (which I used on my mame build) but spent several weeks chasing the set I wanted without luck and besides I figure this is a good excuse to learn something new.

Powering a full car audio setup seemed too much hassle without installing a car battery into the cabinet.

Next thought was an active sub woofer and a couple of 6 inch car speakers.... but apparently those speaker out clips dont power the speakers  .

So my plan at the moment is a set of 6" car speakers running through a t-amp something like this:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271018979239?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

and then also connect an old active sub woofer.

Will this work and am I overlooking problems or better options?

The speakers will be mounted about 400mm above the pc, is this enough space for unshielded speakers?

Like I said I've spent weeks now going back and forth with ideas and so any and all suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks

you could always use external bookshelves as i did , just run speaker wire to anywhere you want , also this gives a better overall sound
if you get quality speakers there is no need for a sub unless you really like the doof doof

i also used an external amp as well , emotiva have some great amps available at a excellent price

depends on your budget

i used bookshelf speakers from adelaide speakers , really nice speakers but i paid $1200 , there are a lot of ranges available he custom makes them and they are excellent with great support

My first juke build used Boston Acoustics 200W 2.1 computer speakers. They rock the house...excellent sound. However, they seem to have gotten out of the computer speaker business. You can still find them around used. If you find a set, I'd highly recommend.

After several people telling me they would be interested in buying that juke, someone finally made a firm offer and is willing to wait until I've completed its replacement. So I am about 75% complete with juke 2.0. In this one, I'm using Some DCM floor speakers I've had sitting around unused. I'm pushing them with a 200W Onkyo receiver. However, if space is a concern, this isn't the setup for you, this thing is a behemoth. Each speaker is a 3 way with a 12" subwoofer. My basement includes a couple of pins and arcade games, so it will fit in.

I looked into the car components, but I really wanted to use these speakers. I'm no electrical engineer and the issues with different impedences scared me away.
You probably remember me from such films as `The Revenge of Abe Lincoln' and `The Wackiest Covered Wagon in the West'

That's been the issue with computer speakers so far, all the recommended ones have been out of date. I was looking for a set of Z-5500 earlier but being in Western Australia seems to have been a pain with this build, I couldn't find them locally, shipping was impractical and the replacement z906 dont seem to have anywhere near as positive reviews. So far I've missed out on 2 sets of the logitech speakers and 2 active subs (when I switched ideas).... I'm going with the bright side that it's made me keep thinking about better options.

A set of boxed speakers is definitely one of the easiest options but unfortunately on this build there's a curved surface, the design is pretty narrow and I do want to keep it all inside the cabinet.

It's also a build for a friend and so the budget is pretty tight, it'll be second hand apart from the car speakers, he seems to think we only need money for the cabinet and lights but I'm refusing to build it if an off the shelf ipod dock sounds better.

we're getting there.... just very slowly.

They can be a tad on the expensive side, but I'm really wanting to experiment with a Bose Wave radio.

They're small, they have a standard RCA line input, and for the size, the sound they put out can be incredible. Can't think of anything easier to wire in either.

My only questions...
1) is it even possible to fit those in a cabinet and duct the sound out of the cab without ruining it
2) can they "auto power up" when the cab is turned on (i'm guessing worst case, you just lock the power switch on, but I'm not sure about that.

I often see em used on ebay for not too bad a price...

I'm guessing you could power up/down with a smart strip. You just need to figure out the best configuration.

Not sure about building it into a cabinet, I'm guessing the unit would need to remain intact and just placed behind a grill and/or fabric.

Yeah, I don't think decasing a Wave Radio is an option.

Guess I'm going to have to pick one up, just to see if it'd work.
