32" crt upright or showcase.
« on: July 19, 2012, 02:16:54 am »
so i bought a 32" tv since my cat wrecked the 27" i love police trainer so plan on getting light guns for it. but my conflict is do i want to build a showcase or an upright. it seems to me being within a foot of the tv would just make it too hard to see on a 32" but at the same time that maybe its not quite big enough to be in a showcase. curious to see what others have to say and if anyone has links to a 32" tv in an upright cab id love to see em.

I have a 32" in my main setup.
Had to get the CP a little over a foot away from the front of the TV for comfortable viewing.
My eyeballs are probably around 30" away from the screen.  It sucks being any closer, so I can't imagine liking it in a standard cab.
It's awesome for light gun games (tv is not angled) and big enough that the vertical games don't look small.

You don't have to go full showcase though.  Check out the "Dino" design toward the end of this thread:

those are some nice cabs he built. the two extra buttons right next to the stick seems weird to me. but i forgot to mention im using a crt flat sceen. so its a big monster at 175lbs. tho i might make  a mock up on a cab see if i can make it to where it will fix through my door way sideways here.

Make sure guns work on it before you start if they're important to you.
I was given a flat 4:3 aspect 36" CRT HDTV for free and was all psyched up to build a showcase.

But my act labs guns wouldn't work because of the built in processing (line doubler) that couldn't be turned off.  :banghead:

EDIT: If you plan to use IR guns, like Aim-Trak...carry on.  They'll work ok.
Not quite as good as real light guns, but good enough.  You will probably have to leave the on-screen crosshairs on.

my only sad part with this TV so far is it doesn't do progressive. so no 480p for me. i just got it hooked up to the svideo cause of that. and the componet on it wont go above 480i. using the svideo helps for when i need to make changes and cant see everything at 640. i have yet to decide on a gun yet. i might get a hold of two old Nes guns that dint work and replace the guts with some aim trak. least i think aim trak has just the ir board available

well since you got it in a KI2 cab how bout a pic of KI running on it. what does the horz screen size end up being if the tv is vert. i thought bout doing it that way too. long as the horx is like 27in id be happy and my girl would be happy cause then i could just do an upright like MK or KI and not take up as much room.

Check the ki2mame link in my siggie. It's practically a 25" screen when showing horizontal games.

I have been fighting the urge to use my 37" 16:10 tv for an upright cab, the plan is to make a stretched out mame/ pinball hybred.
Think the CP may need to be a bit low though and maybe not have a marquee , but whenever i decide its new tv time then that is its fate.

Thinking about using a variation on Moogster66's screen layout? (Not necessarily with the PVC + Tankstick.)

Yeah similar but different :), not seen that build though glad you posted it.
What i am thinking is a more vert cab with the one screen somewhat like a super stretched taito.
I think that if the back of the CP has a downwards lip  then some of the screen can drop slightly below the cp but should still view ok.
One other idea is that if the Cp does indeed sit above and in front the screen then it may be possible  to rotate it, then have a bit of a showcase type cabinet but that's not really how i see it going.
Its all just concepts at the moment and I dont know how well it may work or play but i am going to draw a full sized template one day to see.
One other thing is i do not know how pinball on a vert screen will feel.
I also of course have to pull the trigger on a new tv first
