Next problem was the mounting bracket from the Kosmik Krooser raised the encoder pcb up on the DOT spinner and the encoder disc was impacting the side of the optointerruptor.  Hope you don't mind but I drilled a couple of holes in the vertical mount for the pcb and then again to secure the encoder board closer to the encoder disc.

A quick check of the 8 bit data output shows I can now successfully both increment and decrement the counter using the wheel.  I need to clean up code for the USB interface but should be able to finish up and ship this back over the weekend.

I would REALLY love to get the cabinet plans/dimensions from you. I can't seem to find one of these cabinets for measuring.

This project is amazing by the way. I love the old/school custom stuff. Your Tron Video Pinball custom cabinet was equally redonkulous. This thing is going to be unreal. I wish I could silkscreen my own artwork for a project!

Keep up the great work!! :)

Thanks I will have these plans drawn up and avaiable.
not every route cut but all the basic dimensions and scaled templete.
Ill be attaching art files and cabinet files to each related post for download soon.

Wow thats super cool Xray!
just to recap
DOT used a different opti borad than Tron (previously posted) and found that they used the same opti board in KOZMIK KROOZER
a panel popped up on the bay and got it to both scan the cpo art and use the opti board for this project.
Its also possible that this opti board will be reprod as well

Rich,

I've more or less finished the USB interface hardware but not sure how sensitive the DOT spinner should be.  I fired up Discs of Tron in MAME with the default input configuration and measured the rotation of the DOT spinner as the cursor traveled between the two vertical lines shown in the picture below.

It takes about 1/6 of a turn to move from the left side of the back wall to the right side.  I.e., the knob rotates from the noon position to the 2 on a clock face.  Does that sound about right?

I can't recall if I should be rapidly spinning the knob like in tempest or if it should behave as a more accurate positioning device with lots of spinning to move just a little on screen.

LMK!

Quick update:
Controls have all been worked out. these were matched to have the controls act
exactly like the original.

A little side wierdness fact:
on the original DOT. When rotating the spinner clockwise, one 360 rotation = +128 on the counter. However, rotating counter clockwise = -144 on the counter which indicates a 360 rotation counter clockwise is registered by DOT as a 1 + 1/8 turn.

Also looking into having these small Pcbs reproduced with Leds with possible color options
and Potetiometer to adjust brightness
These were orginally used to light the Joystick Inserts in Gorf.

Cabinet is currently being assemble and will have more pics to post soon.

I'd pick one up for my Gorf...

should be assmebling some protoypes soon.
moded the original with LED lighting and working on designing a "deluxe" version for Tron Mods
Also looking into possibly including the orginal Gorf Harness and or a new one for the "deluxe" version.

Something Ill also be looking into is a fix for the shadowing defect you get from the orginal switch

Cabinet Update
So one of the things thats been plaging me is the sideart for the Space Paranoids side.
Problem is in using the "newer" Space Paranoids poster art is it dosnt feel "vintage"
like Marty McFly its outatime with all its shapding and PSD-esq effects.
the color palette also wasnt quite right and was just a little to "Fan-made"/copy of the newer SP cabs Disney did.

Really looking for something that says
"Wow! I didnt know they made a DOT mini "
and so it needs to have good matching art for Space Paranoids.

The pics dont do it justice, its printed on a light reflective vinyl, so it illumiates when the light hits it.
Like Police cars at night. and have both sides printed and ready for install.

Here's your DOT spinner + controller + cables ready to ship out on Monday.  The controller shows up as a 3 button USB mouse.  I played a couple games of DOT in MAME and it worked flawlessly.

Yeah with the Summer shows and Holidaze finally behind me its time to wrap this project up.

No need to bore with all the details the wood was cut, routed, clamped/glue together, and painted

On one note once I had a nice good paint I did a light hand sand for a nice smooth surface for the vinyl.
Usally Ill just use a WHITE oilbased primer when restoring a cab like I shown in my art install tutorials

Speaking of which
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120041.0.html

no need to go over all that again
kickplate vinyl installed using the Black Happ Pica vinyl here nice thick and durable stuff for the front
along with a kickplate decal using the art from the Enviromental bottom light cover.

One thing to note here I used a table saw with a plastic cuttting blade along with something called CutEase
a great wax like product for cutting plastics to keep the edges from chipping and melting.
