HAPPS Ultimates on sale
« on: October 03, 2003, 06:20:14 pm »
Hey All,

I realize that HAPPS Ultimate 8-way joysticks aren't the preferred joystick by a lot of you, but did want to let everyone know that HAPPS is having a sale on them right now.  Only $6.99 a piece until November 30th.  Just thought I'd pass that along to anyone looking for a deal on some joysticks  :)

Not much Ultimate about an Ultimate..

Wait until supers or competitions are on sale...  (or read Oscars review and then decide)

That depends on what you like.

I prefer ultimates over supers any day.  Supers stink for diagnol accuracy in long term useage.  I also dont like that they are harder to move - thus slower reation times and easier hand fatigue.

My fav stick is the competition.   A bit more durability than the ultimates... better diags than the supers... and faster movments overall.

No disrespect to oscar.. but those are just his opinions as well.  To each his own... (espcially depending on the types of games played)

Basically, your opinions match OSCAR's pretty well as far as the Comp's go.

You are saying Comps - Ultimates - Supers, and OSCAR said Comps - Supers - Ultimates, but . . .

basically OSCAR didn't like the Ultimate b/c it is real similar to the Comp, just not as well made.  Same reason you like it better than the Supers, FWIW *shrug*

Mine is

Comp - Ultimates
Supers (seperate lines)

Supers are down right better for a bunch of games (Timepilots, Gyruss, ect).. For me, its better in about 2/3 of the classics I like.

Comps are down right better for all fighting games.

This is the reason I have hot swap control panels.

The ONLY ones I don't like... Ultimates!  Not worth the difference in a dollar (normal price difference I think).

So if you don't know what to go with...
Get a Comp, or a Super...  And you wont go wrong..  (or JStick)

I picked up a 360 but haven't hooked it up to anything yet. Man does it feel mushy. I think I really need the click to register the motion. Without it, it just doesn't feel right.

Wico leaf > Wico microleaf > Monroe leaf > Wico command control > Happ Supers > Those yellow rotary sticks > happ competition > happ ultimates

I do admit that I haven't tried p360s yet.

It's clear that this is a difference in the games played.

I think the true difference is what you played the game with originally in the arcades..

I'm more used to comps because that is what the local arcades used as generic fixin joysticks.

but I've heard in other countries... people are used to ball tops for fighting games... sigh... that would annoy the !@# out of me.

Supers are just different then comps / ultimates.  You like them or you dont.  They are the way that many classics where shipped and I think are needed... Timepilots just down right suck with comps/ultimates

I believe the first game to ship with Supers was Final Fight, which was in 1989. Or, at least that is the oldest game that I am aware of that actually came with them.

In not certain of the date... but supers are the New'er than ultimates and comp's.

Personally, I first saw them on Soul Calibur in the arcade I worked at.   We had tons of ultimates...and later the competitions started to fan in... but the supers were the last to come... and IMOP the worst  : (

I can see how some may find the supers easier to control some of the older games... as they are very simular in principle to leafs.   They are a bit stiffer as well.. thus if you let go - they will snap to center without bouncing arround. (Some people tend to let go of the stick)  Being harder to push means more accuracy for some...   but it does slow you down a bit.

I myself like the loose feel and speed of the comps/ultimates.   I also like that the actuator is square and you can 'feel the edges'.  I then can know with all certainty that Ive hit the direction I wanted without question.

Funny enough... when I noticed the feel of the super... I was shocked at how you didnt feel the sqaure edges.  I initially thought that I liked it more... but then noticed that the diagnols were harder to hit, and they wore out very quickly.

Also as I first encountered Leafs in a simpsons machine... I got tired of having to bend them into place all the time... and to have to clean the contacts every week for then to funtion.... that I replaced the bottoms with micros...

Worked great for that machine.   But after playing a dedicated Robotron with original leafs... I realize how nice they feel in comparison to some micros.   I 'might'  incorporate them into a panel someday...

P360?  Havnt dealt with them... but probably feel simular to a super or leaf or 49way.   Prolly not great for fighters... but decent enuff for classics.  THough....the price is way steep, and the interface must be a pain.

comps / ultimates - for most new games and fighters.
  leafs - for most classics

Id take a true leaf over a super any day.  The leafs feel better, and are easier to - and cost less to repair.  (the supers 'leaf-microswitches' die and cost lots to replace)

Well the supers are a pretty old stick. When I bought a lot of games a few years back every Capcom one had them (2 Final Fights and 2 Streetfighter 2s). But none of the other ones had them. Almost every Final Fight I have ever seen has had them, which leads me to believe that that they shipped with them, and that is a 14 year old game.

If you guys want to really know, I can always go over and ask Kobozono-san which cabs shipped with which sticks stock from Capcom.

But what is the point. Supers do seem pretty old though. Honestly I don't think that the Capcom arcade guys today play enough to tell the subtle (to them) differences between these sticks.

P360 wires up as easy as a super except that it needs a 5v power source. I like how they work. I think the theory was that there weren't any mechanical switches to wear out but I've heard stories of arcade operators having to clean them constantly to keep the optical switches working. I have no real arcade experience.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.
