Joystick, button pack advice
« on: June 17, 2012, 02:31:10 pm »
Hi all,
Im starting my build in the next few weeks and saw this on ebay. Is this an ok deal and are the products of an ok standard. I dont have the money for 2 ultrasticks and buttons etc at the moment so I was thinking of grabbing something like this.

_http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ARCADE-JOYSTICKS-BUTTONS-KIT-IPAC2-WIRING-/370508411372?pt=UK_Video_Games_Coin_Operated_MJ&hash=item564405b1ec#ht_5240wt_1313

Thanks

The idea of them including 32 pre-crimped wires and the daisy-chain ground sounds pretty good.

Looks like they include Zippyy joysticks which many people use as an inexpensive LS-32 alternative.

The two things that combine to make me nervous about this "deal" are:
1. They are very specific on the I-Pac and talk about that at great length.
2. Joystick, button and switch manufacturers/specs are unspecified beyond "Similar to Happ standard buttons", "Buttons fit a 28mm mounting hole", and "4cm long shaft - 2, 4 & 8 way adjustable".

Have you checked to see if you can get a similar or better deal from Andy at Ultimarc, Gremlin Solutions, Randy at GGG or Bryan at Paradise?

It may not be as convenient, but investing a little time to find components that you will be satisfied with may be better, and less expensive, in the long run.

If you want it cheap, just buy the joysticks and buttons. Make the wiring yourself and hack some gamepads. The most expensive part of this lot is the i-pac 2. If you're located in Europe, I recommend http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk, prices are OK and the shipping is (very) fast!

Gremlin Solutions is the same as the eBay seller in post 1. Looking closely at the joystick washers, those sticks look like Seimitsu LS-32's.

Edit: looks like these http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/ssjoystick1.htm

Ah, true, well spotted, I didn't notice their customer support phone numbers were the same ;-)

Good catch on the phone #.   :applaud:

I agree with your edit link.  99.9% sure that's a Zippyy.  They come with those same red/black switches.

Looks like the buttons use these switches: http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/yennoxmicro.htm

Bad News: The only down side that I see is that Gremlin Solutions doesn't list button manufacturer or switch specs on their site.   ???

Good news:  Buttons are cheap and easy to replace if you don't like them.

Scott

P.S. You might want to consider using some of these to upgrade those Zippyys.
