Video Poker

I want to build a bartop cab to run this software:



the buttons to hold/cancel are 1,2,3,4,5 for each card.  The others are enter, (D)eal, and (E) credit.

In real Video poker, they light up when you press to hold, then turn off if you press again for cancel.

Is there a way to do this?

I'd also like to know where I can get some square lighted buttons like this.

I'd like to save $ by doing a keyboard hack, but I think it's above my skill level so I'll be getting the cheapest encoder I can find.

I've been wanting a real video poker for years, but the great state of NJ says I can't own one.  And, for some reason, the sellers on Ebay listen to NJ  

This can be much cheaper anyway, so any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks.  Art

not that i would reccommend doing something illegal, but why not hit up an auction in a neagboring state? I bet game auctions in NJ sell them too. (they don't care about the laws most of the time from what I've heard)

I also picked up a 9" color monitor refurb on ebay.  Local pickup, so I think a good deal for me.

I picked up  Merit Pit Boss cab and am in the process of Mame'ing it but was wondering what options I had for poker/gambling software.

FWIW I got one of those 9" monitors as well and they work pretty well.  It is really small though, so any software you run will have to keep things big, no small fonts or high resolutions.

Hey Jacktucky, any chance that software will run full screen? also are there a lot of windowsy dialogue boxes you have to go through to choose a game?
Im running a 10 year old dos video poker game on my cab, but its well over due for an upgrade.

It remembers your name and $, so you have to select a player when you start it up.  You can use arrows and Enter keys to select.

After that, it's basically Enter, D, 1,2,3,4,5 to run the game.

Same software available at OfficeMax for the same price, so you may find it there.
I looked at it this morning but I'm still trying to find a free alternative. It appears that this still has dialogs to go through before starting play and I don't like it either.

What are you running? Is this freely available?

I checked the license and it is freeware . I put it up in my web site area so you can download it if you want to. It runs in dos and also  works on XP. It is not very cab friendly it requires the following keys :
1,2,3,4,5 and ENTER  and if you want to enter your name in the high score list you will need a keyboard or you could just hit enter and leave it blank.

I have dedicated buttons 1 thru 5 on my cab and ENTER is button #1 on my player 1 joystick so it works well on my layout.

That's not a bad program.  It's a real bandit though in my testing.  Really the only thing I didn't like about the $19.95 program was the multi play.  I like one hand like this download.  I may put them both on there.  

I also like the DOS capability.

Like I said in the other thread, I got my buttons from Happ.  It would be awesome to be able to control the lights with the software somehow.

Does a PC have 6.3 volts to power these lights at all?

PCs only have 5 & 12 volts...
You could use a resistor with the 12V or just have the lights be a bit dim with the 5V...

Give it a shot.

Actually you can hook up between the 12V (yellow) and the 5V (red) and you get 7V, this is a common trick to run 12V cooling fans at lower speeds when one wants a quieter fan/computer. Just make sure that that circuit is isolated from the 5V/GND circuit for the button contacts, you wouldn't want to short anything to ground.

Art, I do have one question though. Wouldn't you be breaking the video poker laws by building your own machine? I think that you would. Might as well just import one from a neighboring state.

But, if I take a legal piece of software, stick it into a cabinet (no coins), I can't believe I'd be breaking the law.

When you play these video poker/slots, are you using a coin door/coin acceptor that triggers the insert coin/credit?  Does this game payout actual money?  If no, then I wouldn't worry about being legal.
