Xarcade dual stick for $99
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:22:44 pm »
Just thought I would pass the info on  (No, I don't work for Xarcade)

http://www.frys.com/product/3456963?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I just picked one up for the heck of it since it was so cheap.   After tax it was like $108

Actually pretty nice, just make sure to use the PS/2 input rather than the USB if you plan to play any 2 player fighting type games.

You could buy a pair HAPP competition joysticks and some buttons $30-40 and and an ipac or mini pac and drill some holes in a piece of plywood for about $100 :lol But since you bought an xarcade already i would just replace the sticks and buttons and your good as gold! Seems like you might work for Xarcade because you have over 400 posts here in this forum and you would think you would be up the xarcade by now!!!!!!!!!!!!! :dunno :lol :lol

You could also but a pair of happ bat sticks and 16 buttons for $44 and 2x usb gamepads for $7. That and some plywood\MDF wont cost you over 60 bucks, if your trying to save moneys.

Actually I dont work at Xarcade. Not sure why 400 post would make it appear that I work for Xarcade? ??? Dont get it

Also, totally true about the ply wood, sticks etc for $100, been there done that. I just dont have the time to build another machine at the moment so this is a quick clean and easy way to play a game of street fighter with my kids.     Love the hobby, but sometimes life gets in the way.

No kidding.  I don't even have kids (or a wife) but I do have a job and other hobbies.  I have considered starting a second project several times but I never get beyond the "think about it on the drive to work" phase because the moment I recall the experience of building my first cabinet and how freaking long it took, I shudder.

So, I was strongly considering picking up one of these X-Arcade units so I can rig up something in my garage for the summer.  I was thinking of using a projector as well, for something different.  My brother has a tank stick so I know what to expect.  No, not the best controls but probably good enough for a secondary setup that can be moved around.

Wow, lots of hate for the X-Arcade.

It's not the best hardware money can buy, but it works and it gets you started with zero real effort.  Or is that what some people don't like?  That it's an easy shortcut?

I've got a tankstick and with it, an old laptop, and a card table I set up a quickie game station playing NBA Jam on a 42" plasma TV.  The kiddies loved it.  They actually liked it better than my dedicated cab.  The screen was too small, they said.  (grr ;) )

Sure you can build something better/cheaper, but how many people do you think are willing to do that, versus how many people are willing to buy a $100 joystick?  The X-Arcade is great because it lets more people in the door to this hobby.

Not really.  Most of these posters have probably bought X Arcade or equivalent and haven't even started on a project yet.

I'm surprised mine are still in the original case. But like the above posters say, the unit is great for portability.

I would buy it for the encoder, and the hardware then pop it all in a Weecade, and still make out like a bandit.

DIY isn't $60, especially if you do not have the tools or the room.  It is more like $140 as you never finish it.

But the X Arcade  is marvellous if you have a console collection.  :applaud:

I've been using this for the pass few days and I'll have to say, it does the trick.  Very easy to use and very portable.

I've made a few cabs during the past years and I plan to make a cocktail cab for my kids eventually,  but in the mean time this Xarcade allows me to bust out some quick games whenever and where ever I want, especially since I just got the adapter to hook to my Wii and Dreamcast. ;D

Tell you what, you cant beat the price for what it can do.   Sure you could probably build  something better, but from what I've learned from my past building experience, what ever I build, it will never be done.    I always tend to find something new to add or tinker with when it comes to this hobby!   You got to love it!    Oh again i don't work for Xarcade and also I have no plans to drop this into an arcade machine. :laugh2:

Never had an Xarcade but actually had a PS1/PS2 arcade stick that was very similar in layout. I like it still, nice 2 player controls in an easy to move/store setup. I am pretty sure playing Metal Slug X on that thing is what got me re-obsessed with arcade controls in my adult life.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Totally true!

The interface has a few cons, well at least one that I've witnessed while using it in USB mode,  but I think the pros out way the cons.   I love that I can hook this thing up to pretty much any system and have it work.

I think people get too caught up in the,  "Hey I can make that for cheaper etc"   and then they bash things before they really see what this thing can do.   I was originally on the fence with this, until I saw it for an affordable price and now I'm re thinking it.   I mean you have to admit, this thing is pretty versatile.   Look how many systems it works with.

Got mine for $40 with a PS2 adapter from some kid that got it as a present and never used it (his dad was grousing the whole time I was carrying it off).  Another $10 grabbed an Xbox adapter off E-bay, though honestly once you've got a PS2 adapter you've got the world since there's a billion adapters to use dual shock controllers on anything.

Trying to figure a way to get it mounted to my exercise bike.  I've managed to sweathog 5lbs off with a little cheapie Mad Catz wireless controller but might as well go full retard.

I believe propcycle is now playable in MAME.  ;)
(it does take a powerful computer to run)

You should build a replica Street Fighter 1 panel with the giant rubber cupcakes.  Get a good arm workout while you're at it.  :)

The X arcade units would be fine if they would spend another $5 on making them and at least put proper Happ Super joysticks in them. Instead they save a couple bucks, use a knock off that favors the diagonals and end up with a poor product.

I'll tell you what, its been pretty good so far and well worth the $99 I spent on it.  The sticks do feel very similar to happs supers,  so much that I don't know if it would even be worth switching them out.

I should be getting my Dreamcast/Playstation adapter today and I'm really looking forward to testing it out.

I've had the standard x-arcade, Sanwa JLFs, & happ comps in mine.
Currently have the comps in there, but I think I prefer the standard x-arcade over the comps.
I used the x-arcade sticks in other projects, but I dislike the comps enough that I'm considering buying new x-arcade sticks.
(More than likely I'll give a random joystick from groovygamegear a whirl though)

Not sure about the supers.  Probably not worth changing.

 ???

As for the Supers, I've got a 4-way on my cabinet.  It doesn't have the best feel, but it can much more of a beating than the Comps.

My favorite 4-way that you can buy new is the Reunion one, but it can be a problem retrofitting that one into a lot of machines.

Next best choice is the happ universal, it is sort of dumb looking, but it has great 4-way action and you can even loosen it up a bit and rotate it 45 degrees for qbert.

For anyone hating the x-arcade big "X" overlay, looks like someone added their own overlay.  I also found a picture where someone added lit buttons.

Ok, this one might be a little too much.  :lol  Cocktail cab with an X-arcade stick on 3 sides.  Must have cost a bundle.
Probably wouldn't be so bad if they didn't use the metal wall shelve bracket to secure the control panels.
