Need Some Controller Help
« on: May 25, 2012, 08:11:05 pm »
I have three custom arcade (MAME/PS3) controllers that I'm working with.  All of them use Cthulhu PCBs (PC/PS3 versions).  All of them work perfectly fine for MAME and for almost all of my PS3 games.  I'm having an issue with one PS3 game though - Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds.  The issue is a strange one.  For all games, the controllers control the standard D pad with the joystick.  On Hot Shots, the joystick controls the left analog stick instead, which is pretty useless.

I'm wondering if anyone has come across this issue and if there is a solution to make it work only with the D pad.

Please - anyone?  I just gotta have my golf with an arcade stick on my 82" TV.  I find the buttons are a heck of a lot more responsive than the PS3 controller.  I really don't want to gut a PS3 controller to make this work.

Just so you all know, I've been building arcade sticks since the first Playstation came out by gutting and soldering controllers (1995).  Yep, I'm that old!  This is the first time I've ever seen this type of issue.

Thanks all,
Jermdog

And that was your first and second post on the boards here.

And that's one heck of a specific question (particular PCB running against a particular PS3 game).

Not trying to discourage your posting or anything, but give it a little time.

Q: When using the Cthulhu on a PC, moving the stick around causes BOTH the X/Y axis to change, and the POV Hat to change to match. When using the Cthulhu on a PS3, moving the stick around causes BOTH the d-pad to change, and the Left analog stick to change to match. Why does this happen, and how could I change it?
A: The Cthulhu is designed to do this; it's normal and won't cause any problems. This setup was created as a compromise between how PC games usually expect the directions to be reported (X/Y axis) and how the PS3 expects the d-pad to be reported (POV hat). With this setup, you can just plug and play on most if not all of the games you want to play on both PC and PS3. If you would like the stick to be reported as one and only one of those for whatever reason, hold down the Select or Start button when plugging in; I don't remember which is which, but one disables the X/Y and only reports dpad/POV hat, the other disables POVhat/dpad and only reports over the left analog stick/X/Yaxis

Thanks for the responses.  I guess I was a little impatient Friday... I usually get responses on other boards in minutes.  Guess I need to learn to wait.

Thanks again for the link to provided.

No worries, for questions on the cthulhu boards, though, it's almost always quicker to ask at the shoryuken boards. Toodles hangs out there quite a bit and is awesome for tech support on his products.
