My problem is my first exposure to arcade games was on early Atari console ports... which while often very well done, must have been easier. I could play 7800 Mario Bros or 5200 Defender until I got bored and turned them off... the ones in MAME... not so much. And Sinistar, yeah, I might as well just spend that 25 cents on gum.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Are you playing Sinistar on a dedicated machine? Unless you have a 49-way, you'll probably always suck at it.  ;D

Yeah, I gave up on Sinistar.  Maybe I'll revisit if I make a dedicated panel for it (when I make the cabinet that houses the dedicated panels).

Other games I suck at: all fighting games.

Sinistar needs a special controller to be able to control it properly / well.

Sinistar used a 49way stick, which is like an analog joystick (but uses optics instead of pots).
However... unlike the new style of 49ways, and unlike the typical analog joysticks... Sinistars stick uses a special rubber spring system.  The further you press the stick, the harder it is to move the stick.  This makes it 1000x easier to cruise at low speeds to pick up crystals, without accidentally zooming at warp 10 right past them.

A typical analog has very bad spot in the center, where the metal springs cause the stick to want to pull in specific directions.  This leads to inaccurate control.. so many games create a dead-zone in a portion of the center, to help deal with that.  Also, a lot of modern analog games are not very precise.   When you overcome the initial centering springs on an analog... it becomes too easy to go from the center to the edge, and so you generally have poor ability to control the character.  Its like trying to run on ice.

Still, even with the perfect controller for the game... its STILL a BEAST.   Supposedly the game programmers had made the perfect balance of gameplay difficulty... but the executives made them change it to better suit the coin-op operators, who were complaining about game times being too long.

Use the cheats in mame, and practice that way.  Once you get the hang of it.. try without the cheats.  I know Ive beaten level 3, and I think my best was me making it to level 5, and getting spanked.

You have to be very accurate with your Sinibombs, so that when you kill him, you have several bombs left over for the next level.  Sinibombs have a tendency to hit rocks and other ships, or even miss Sinistar altogether.  The best way to drop them, is when he is closest... which makes it more dangerous.  You also have to try to drop them when the screen is clear of rocks or enemies.  Keep a good fire pattern down, fending off enemies before letting them loose.

Also, if you Miss a crystal... the enemy tends to grab it, even if you never see it happen.  So be very careful not to miss any of them.  And should an enemy grab one from you... you can destroy him, and get back the crystal he had collected.

You can also destroy Sinistar's parts as he is being built.. but, that usually doesnt work well on the later stages.  You simply have to be quick and keep up your mining.

 Other Tips:

- Shoot the Rocks for a certain period of time... them stop for a moment.  Firing too much can cause the rock to break apart too fast... either vanishing completely, or sending too many crystals all over the place.  You just need to get it vibrating to release a few, then swoop around to them and pick them up... and repeat the vibration process.

If the rock isnt giving it up... move on.  Some rocks spill crystals like a winning slot machine.  Others spit one out at most, then blow up. A lot of times, smaller rocks can yield a lot more crystals than you think... even more than larger rocks.

- Turn quick without moving = A good move to be able to fire at the enemies, but maintain your position for further mining.

- Remember: You can shoot the enemies bullets to nullify them.

- Shoot the Turret gunners immediately, before anything else.  If they are left on the screen too long, they will eventually nail you.  The miners are pretty much harmless.

- Listen for the sound effects.  There are certain sounds that let you know when Sinistar is built, when you have collected the maximum # of crystals, and more.   You can see his location on radar.. but generally, the games so fast that you cant even look at it.

- If you run out of Sinibombs, its almost always game over.  The only chance you have, is when your next guy appears, immediately mine some crystals.  Use the rocks as a shield to keep him away even as you are trying to mine.  You might get lucky, and he gives you enough time to get the final bomb you need.

Another game which needs the proper controllers. You need the original Wico 8way Leaf Switch joysticks.  They have smooth round restriction, effortless centering via a rubber centering pivot system, and the leafs are less fatiguing and quicker to actuate than micros.  Which severely is needed in this relentless game.

The other thing you have to do, is to get as many humans as possible. If you get them consecutively, you get more and more points per human... and can rack up a lot of extra men this way.  In particular, on the Brain stages.  You can rack up enough men on the brain stages to get you to the next brain stage..  and thus keeping you alive thru many many rounds.

Theres enough Tips on this game to take up several pages... so Ill leave you to research this on your own.

Actually, turning the controller should make it easier to play.  Which is why it was done like that.
However, I never liked that game much, so never cared to get good at it.  IMOP, its not really fun.  Its just painful, awkward, and slow feeling... and no real great reward for all that effort.

im an ok fast pacman player, but for ms pacman,
The difference between a good player and a great one, is usually the level of details you get into.  For example, you can pass the first level easily and quickly.. but an expert player might spend more time getting all 4 ghosts to multiply the bonus scores on all 4 power pellets. Additionally, they will eat all the fruit.  This is best done on the beginner levels, because in the later levels the power pellets are too quick to do this with.  The time of the pellets is cyclic I believe.. so you have to know the pattern, and how much time you have to play with.  If you get all the extra points, you have a chance at getting more men... and thus staying alive longer.

The only other thing to do is to learn the patterns to avoid ghosts.  Its something Id never do... cause my memory sucks... but to me, its also cheating, to play like that.  Personally, I cant play standard speed.  I have to use the speed-hack ms pacman to enjoy the game.

I used to hate it... but now I really like the challenge of it.. even though it still stomps me.
Having a good button layout would really help with this game.  Also, using reverse button, rather than mapping it to the other directions on the joystick, will yield better results.  It just will take a little getting used to at first.

I think the key to these games, is that its the shear speed in response time that is the most challenging to you.  Improvement wont come from a 5 to 10 minute bout.  Not even years of that.  It will have to come at hour or longer consecutive sessions.  You really have to push yourself hard, to experience the next level stuff.

Of course, when you have done that, eventually you might get to the point where many of these games are not challenging enough.  As remember, a lot of them were never really made to balance out past a 10min mark.   They expected to whoop you off the machine in 1 to 5 min.

This might be the real reason, but Gezz Xiaou2, thanks for taking the time to write such nice tips, especialy the sinistar ones...wish i would find original 49 controlers to try with. Seems that they will offer better perfomance. I remember i use to play tapper for hours and never loose, i made a 1000,000 points score onceand got back to 0...no big deal, but today days, im lucky if i reach past the aliens stage...thanks again for your tips...

Don't worry Abispac.  There are those here that are worse off.

My wife got dropped off at the mall/theater/arcade with her older brother for babysitting as a kid.  I always had a pc at home but no game decks or arcades close by.  So while I like the games, she can and does mop the floor with me all d*** day.  To the point where you can't play two player with her on any classic unless you brought a book to read.

Pinball is the only reason there's any corners left on my card at all  :)

That's why you have more than one machine in the house. Either of you can kick back and watch the other rip some ass....or you can go rip some yourself.

@abispac: since I saw the game in '84, I hated Mario Bros. Until a couple years ago. Recently, I broke a hundred thousand. In general, all the games I hated or didn't care for as a kid - Donkey Kong being near the top of the list - I've in the last several years found to be great games, and play them more than the games I really liked as a kid.

*DK is the quintessential video game. It's complex, and almost perfect. While it has a kill screen, the points and game play on any particular board are less determined than Pac. I play DK more than any game.

Now Sinistar is just a hard game.
