Gamepad USB okay?
« on: October 01, 2003, 04:22:04 pm »
Ok, so this is my first post, but i've kind of been a part of the community for a while. I've been coming to this site for probably 3 years now, just never had to post anything. I'm in the middle of building my 3rd full size cabinet, and I got a new computer for it. This new computer is the first one that can support usb gamepads.

My past 2 machines have run of a gravis grip gamepad 4 player system, which worked pretty well, however ran okay.

This new machine is going to be a 3 player cabinet, and I was planning on hacking 3 USB gamepads. Any concerns? I tried searching this site, and the message boards, and found no reason not too.

I just finished all the artwork on the machine, and it looks sweet btw

The only problem I've heard of is the Pad's sometimes swapping positions.  Assuming you already have the pads, try this.  Plug them all in and start MAME, Label the Player 1 pad as 1, the Player 2 pad as 2, and the Player 3 pad as 3.  Quit MAME.

Reboot and verify Pad 1 still controls P1, Pad 2 - Player 2, etc.  Repeat until you are convinced it works.

If you don't see any problems, I would say you are fine.

Just two things about this. I was totally unable to find any identical USB gamepads that wouldn't sometimes swap positions after poweroff.

Secondly, don't use any Gamepad Pros. They have ghosting issues when hacked.

My reccomendation is to get 3 DIFFERENT gamepads, which should completely avoid the issue of them swapping postitions (different pads will keep position after poweroff).
