Want To Build Or Buy A New Cabinet
« on: May 14, 2012, 12:48:37 pm »
New to the group howdy all. I am thinking about a new MAME cabinet. I currently have a nice 25in monster with an on SlickStick Classic on it. I spent a lot of time fitting in a new Wells Gardner Monitor and paid the premium price for it too. Decent sound an all. However I can get comfortable on these multi layout control panels. Turns out I hate 4 way games with a joystick in any position but center. Same goes for Tempest spinner at the top doesn't cut it.

I am thinking of jettisoning it and starting over. Maybe a smaller cab with a 24in LCD or so (upon your suggestions) something narrower than the 35in beast I have now. Here is where I am going to diverge.

I will want to have 4 control panel I can change out all built on the same template. 4 Latches below and usb/ps2 cables close and easy to disconnect.

One panel with a single 4/8 Way centered like the original games Dig Dug etc..
One panel in 2 player config same 4/8 with 6 or 7 buttons
One panel exact layout of Missile Command maybe 3in trackball and original atari switches for that panel but centered with regular buttons placed for centipede to each side of the trackball inside the Missle Command buttons on the left.
One panel centered spinner and two buttons for (well you get the idea.)
I figure I can use the 2 player for Robotron and sacrifice the proper layout for the sake of not having 5 panels laying about.
All panels have obligatory credit, pause and other needed buttons on the upper left.
Maybe the two player panel can have 2 side buttons for flippers.

Any panel can be added later for rotary or something else as the mood strikes me but at all time not molesting the game play of the other games.

If you know of any cabinet builder out there that might have a product or someone who would build one I am ready to go.

You might consider a multi-level CP...with your 4 player controls on the lower deck and single player control centered on the upper deck
2-player upright dual trackball / dual 8-way rotary joysticks - built from scratch

I think I've decided to find a Dynamo 25in cabinet off CL. Preferably one with the tray attached to the control panel. I will then just find 3 or 4 old control panels (I seem to recall all of the 2 player Dynamo for the different 25 in cabs are the same). I will then rebuild each panel and make an easier way to interchange them like wing nuts along the hinge.

Not sure where you are located but I am moving soon and I believe my wife will make me sell my slim cabinet again.  This is the second one i have built.  I am moving in june or july and live in florida. if you are close and interest i can send you you tube videos of it.  it has 2 joys, 6 buttons per player, front loading dvd 26 lcd monitor, small footprint, controller ports for hooking up nes, snes, n64,and gamecube.  i think its quad core, 1.5tb 8 gb ram.  not sure all spec i just know my old lady will make me sell, i sold my other one when i moved 2 years ago and just built another one that was cooler because i added all the controller ports, lol.
