Connecting an Original X-Box to a PC Monitor - Solved and Success

Anybody familiar with this?

Has anyone ever done this, and how do you do it.

I've been all over the web and can't find a decent tutorial or answer.

Here's an old guide to building a VGA cable.  I'm by no means an expert but I'm pretty sure that you need a special firmware that supports it so it might only work on certain versions of Xbox.

Get an x2vga

I guess that would be the easy way.  When I said firmware in my original post what I meant was Bios.  You can probably still find that on xbins.  I would do what PBJim says though if you can find one.

Looks like those things don't exist.  Neoya doesn't seem to make them anymore.  Any other suggestions?

Use a component cable, hook it up to a tv to put it into progressive mode in the dashboard settings, then hook it up to a component to vga adapter. I used a Mayflash vga001 adapter because it was cheap, though its not readily available cheaply anymore. The vga001 is actually a transcoder, so it will need the xbox to actually output in progressive.
Alternatively, you can get one of the CGA to VGA adapters that also includes YUV inputs.

I believe that one does not need progressive scan to be enabled, but you will likely get a better picture with it enabled.

Hey assuming you have already modded said xbox, follow these directions:

If you want the purest vga source do this:

1. grab a vga cable  - cut one end off and split the wires out.

2. grab a stock xbox av cable and remove the cover on the end and sheer off the cable part --chuck the cable but you need the connector part that plugs into the xbox.

3.Solder together following this guide:


4. Check http://ps-2.kev009.com/sog/ for if your monitor you plan to use can utilize Sync-On-Green (SOG) --most monitors after 2002 can i am told

5.  If it can SOG than you are in luck and can try without building the circuit first and using the vga bios dvd bootable to test.

I cannot link the burnable DVD here obviously i'm assuming it uses microshaft code, but it can be found online and if you cannot find it pm me.

If your monitor doesn't support SOG, I have purchased 5  LM1881's and can send you 1 all you need to do is send me shipping cost

I've done my research and Man, I'm a bit confused. It seems easy but everyone is making this hard.

The easiest route seems to be to get the HD Pro Converter.  Cheapest I've found is $42.00 and thats shipped w/i the states.  No flashing, no additional softmodding.  Works with all monitors.  Although this is the most expensive route.

The cheapest route, which im going to follow and I'll update if it works.  Buy the following

VGA to RCA Cable $1.90
RCA Coupler $.68
Xbox Component Cable 3.99

Locate a compatible Sync on Green Monitor (craigslist), which shouldn't be difficult, folks are giving away Dell 19" monitors with SOG these days. I've located a few for a about $30.00.

Finally Upgrade Softmod with Frosty's Dual-Boot VGA Softmod v1.0

I'll post again if it works....Hopefully.

Not 100 percent sure but i think a xbox360 to vga may fit the xbox aswell unsure will test when i get to fiancees as thats where my 360 and my old xbox's are if so the 360 ones are DIRT cheap other than that theres OPTION 2

buy one of these use an old xbox connector cut the end of and wire apropriately at a guess im sure there are people who could help you with the wiring   just looked up lol

Xbox 360 and original xbox cables are completely different. As mike says check your monitor, if it's SoG then a xbox component and VGA to component cables may work, you may also have to flash the tsop with a vga bios or just run the frostythesnowman softmod.
If your xbox build is 1.6 then you cant flash or run the FTSMsoftmod due to it having a different GPU, for that you would need a convertor board(and power supply) The cheapest are shipped from China, so ebay YUV to vga or Composite TV AV/S Video To VGA and check the worldwide box. Double check your input/outputs before buying though. There are also a few vga boxes out there desinged for games consoles, x2vga+ and MAYFLASH YPBPR TO RGBHV VGA BOX.
One other thing VGA only works on NTSC, so if you're Pal region you need to switch it using Enigmah region switcher.

I'm interested in rigging up the original xbox's not the 360's.  I've never owned one.  Plus I've gotten pretty good at modding the originals.  I know its not rocket science but sticking to what I know.

Seems the overall summary for a softmodded XBox is to follow Frosty's dual vga tutorial. It basically spells out, what MB it will support and Retail Bios.  Which you can find out in the system config of any softmodded dashboard.

I'm following DGEN on youtube, I think he uses converters similar to the one listed by Gizmogames and myself in a prior post.

I've got a few items ordered, so I will see if it gets me what I'm looking for.

went to fiances and altho they look very similar the 360 one wont work damm microsoft lol that would of been ideal

My parts came in and I've tested this setup and it works perfect. You have to tweak the monitor screen via the monitor menu, and the xbox menus to get it to fullscreen.  Looks really good....Super Happy Now...
