Rotary Happs - Optipac?
« on: October 01, 2003, 11:54:37 am »
Just wondering if I can get a set of those rotaries from Happ and connect them to an opti-pac, or if I need a special adapter/connector thingy.  Sorry if this was asked before, I'm FAAAAR too lazy to go looking for old posts, and hell you guys are so helpful!  ;D

If it's mechanical rotaries... you'd need druins rotatry interface (a google search will bring it right up)

but what previous poster sad was correct -- if optical happs rotataries you can use opti pac!

good luck!

What Rampy said, or for the Optical rotaries, you could use www.oscarcontrols.com pre-hacked USB mouse interface for $9.  (on the order page).

Thanks guys, that makes it a bit easier...I'm doing up a board with 4 player sticks, a dedicated 4 way, the rotaries, and a trackball and spinner....argh, the wiring is going to be interesting... I was going to get some ebay Ikari sticks, then saw a mention of the interface board, and wondered if the opti-pac would run the happs, or if they were replacements for the ikari type...now I know...maybe!  ;D

Happ has 2 rotary types, "optical" and "Ikari" type.    Optical has a free(sort of) spinning action, while "Ikari" has clicking lock positions.

Optical can be used directly by OptiPac but depending what game you want to play, and if you are looking for authentic feel, it may not satisfy you.

Ikari type is the replacement for the original SNK yellow click types (Ikari, Guerrilla war, Time Soldiers, etc).  Ikari type needs the extra interface before going to Ipac or other keyboard encoder, but if you want the original feel for those games, it's the most accurate reproduction of gameplay.

I have a pair of the Happs Optical sticks, and frankly, the gameplay is great. I have no problem using these instead of the "clicking" type (12 position) sticks. Also, with these you can play more games than with just the ikari type. Tron being an example.

I too use the Opti-Pac for these. Works excellent. Just  abit of analog tweaking for each game and your set!  8)
