Found a new Steering Wheel I like - SRW-S1
« on: April 30, 2012, 07:18:52 pm »
Found a cool new steering wheel that I tried that I like a lot.  The SRW-S1.  It's one that you hold in your hands (without mounting - although you can mount it if you wanted).  It's got a gazillion programmable buttons and well-placed paddles on the back for analog acceleration and braking and digital gear shifts (there are no foot pedals).  I've tried a bunch I didn't like, but I think this one is good.  The sensitivity of the motion detection of the steering is well done and highly adjustable.  It works with most every PC driving game and (of course) in MAME.

Keep in mind, I am NO expert at racing games and have never tried a really expensive set-up.  And I haven't played with it much, but it's been fun.

You can see more of my review of it and some links about it on my blog at...

SO I got this wheel for 75 bucks, and having a hell of a time setting it up. Mind sharing how you did it?

Funny that I bought one this week as well, at an ebay auction for $10.
However I have no idea of which racing games that has full support for it so that the RPM LED's will be lit etc.
Right now I'm just using the Windows 7 native drivers, and that works fine for the basic functions.

The RPM LED's on the G27 only work in a few games, so probably not many.

So far the plethora of buttons on this wheel is actually helpful. Games that use a radio, views, and other things like coin, start, and quit are all at my fingertips.

It's different if they're all labeled and consistent across different games.  :lol

I downloaded the Simraceway game yesterday, and it is actually pretty good. So far I have only been playing the games from SimBin before (being patriotic, with the developers more or less next door), but this one seems to be close seen from a very brief comparison.
The game is free to download, but then there is micro transactions for extra content (cars, tracks etc).
I will definitely put some more time in to this game. By the way, the RPM LED’s are working right away without any additional efforts.

These types of controllers are garbage.

Not only are they laggy and not very precise...   but even if they were dead on accurate...  you have to hold the thing in the air for long periods of time.

Id love to see someone do a 100 lap race with their arms outstretched... let alone a simple few rounds of Virtua Racer, or other  2 to 5 min race romp.

I always laugh at all these ideas for air gesture / virtual controls.   People are getting strain from physical devices that slide, or are rested upon.  Imagine an 8hr work session where you had to keep waving your hands in the air!   Let alone counting the time when you go home... and do more gesturing.

Not only that..  but why in the world would you want to replace batteries every month?  And or if rechargeable.. buy all new batteries every year or so, when they fail to hold more than a 5min charge.

You also have a device, thats easily lost, and can get dropped / crushed / broken / stolen / and submersed in liquid via a vicious pack Gremlins.

Ohh, almost forgot the best part...  The wireless receiver will eventually die.  It will start off by losing packets, then a loss in functional range... intermittent disconnections... and finally... Kaput.

Yeah, I second your general opinion about this topic.
However this specific controller is USB wired. And it is quite easy to mount if you wanna do some serious racing.

From the beginning I bought mine in order to get a cheap interface for a lot of buttons to my flight sim. I.e. the plan was to cannibalize it, but now I might keep it for casual driving sessions when I don't want to remove all the flight gear and replace it with my old Sidewinder racing wheel and pedals.
