Cardinal sin - MAMEing a Tron
« on: April 27, 2012, 12:09:06 pm »
I was thinking about modifying a Tron upright by replacing the digital joystick with an analog flightstick and running MAME with a bunch of flying games using the stick and driving games using the spinner. It seems a couple of pedals and a shifter scabbed on the side would open up a lot of opportunities.

Of course the machine would default to the original game on startup. Has anyone ever done something like this?

You'll probably get a lot of grief here but I don't have a problem with it.  Unless you're close to me and your cabinet art is in better shape than mine in which case I'd like to swap you cabinets before you go about your business.

That said I don't really see the point since you're replacing the stick with something that probably won't glow so a huge part of the draw to that game is lost anyway.  I built my first rig in a tempest cabinet, but only because I got it totally empty and it would have cost a fortune to put back together.  If you've got a working Tron you're better served selling it off and using the money to get most of what you need to build your entire rig in a generic cabinet.  You can certainly trade for a working JAMMA cabinet plus a couple hundred bucks.  I'd take that trade.  I have two cabinets ready for you now. :)

If you are going to ruin it anyway, why wouldn't you just sell it and get a generic cab?
