Top fire button joystick
« on: September 29, 2003, 03:50:55 pm »
I am interested in buying a top fire button joystick for MAME?

There seems to be very few choices for this kind of joystick.  The two that I know of are Happs and Suzo.

I really like the Suzo, but I can not find a reliable source for it in the US.  Wico shows it in their catalog but never has it in stock!  Any suggestion on how can I get the Suzo top fire button joystick in the US?

Maybe ask RandyT at http://www.groovygamegear.com. He sells the normal version (without top fire button) maybe he's also planning to sell the top fire ones too.

Also check ebay for an Atari 2600 controller called the "Wico Command Control".

It is a HIGH QUALITY Wico leaf switch joystick with a top fire button. Mine has a red bat handle on it. They only require minor modifications to install in your panel (drill four mounting holes in the case).

They usually sell for really cheap, and have a better feel than any other top fire I have used.

Thanks for the tip.  I will check them out.
I suppose that they are 8-way sticks with discreet wiring out for each switch (4 + 2 fire buttons) ?

Can anyone give specifics on the modifications needed to to connect to encoder?  This was made for Atari 2600/C64 so I imagine it doesnt' have microswitches that are accessible.

Thanks in advance....

Ok, sure.

The joystick itself is a single button stick, don't let the two buttons throw you, they both activate the same switch.

If you take off the bottom plate you will find 5 normal leaf switches. You just pull the original wires off, and then wire it from scratch as if it were a brand new stick from Happs.

As long as you still have the bottom off you can drill your mounting holes too. Just 4 holes that go through the casing without hitting any of the leaf switches.
