Neo Geo MVS extra buttons.
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:34:35 am »
I have searched the internet and this forum and have not found my answer.

I have recently bought a Neo Geo MVS 4 slot (Euro specs. still original with manual) it was build by rit legno by order of Neo Geo.

Is it possible to add 2 extra buttons to this machine so you have 6 buttons in total?

I have some custom cartridges with capcom fighting games who utilize 6 buttons.

Thanks for the replys

Sure, just add them in line with the bottom button.  The addition of 2 buttons will be a little off of the standard 6 button layout biut if you space them them like the buttons above it will look like they were originaly there.

Hey bob,

Where do I connect the 5th and 6th button?
Because a neo geo mvs doesnt have any knowledge of 2 extra buttons because there fighting games are only made for 4 buttons.
But now I have neo geo mvs cartridges with capcom games?
So again is it possible to add 2 extra buttons? Remember this is not a MAME cabinet.

Thanks

Is there any documentation for those custom carts ? That would be where the answer is to be found, unless somebody here has one of those same carts.

I'm curious about this.  Is there some sort of kick harness addition that would be used in line with those custom carts?  Does it use some method of "button combinations" to create a virtual 5th and 6th button? It may even be possible it just ignores two buttons altogether.

I tried a quick and dirty Google search but came up with nothing.  Hopefully someone else has more info.

Same here, I googled and found nothing, the blue elf 2 and the transformer 2011 both have capcom fighting games and are for the neo geo mvs, but it seems that the neo geo mvs is not cappable of utilizing 6 buttons.

Lets say I mame(ed) my neo geo mvs, what do I need. Just a jamma to pc converter to connect my pc to the neogeomvs? No need for a RGB VGA converter etc???

Thanks guys.

JAMMA doesn't support 6 buttons (actually, it doesn't really support 4 buttons, but exceptions are made as there is room on the harness). Any JAMMA game with more than 4 buttons is going to use an extra (kick) harness.

If you were to use a JPac, then the extra buttons can be wired directly to the JPac (bypassing the JAMMA harness) just like you would on an IPac.

That's not strictly true. The Atomiswave system uses 5 buttons and they all work from the JAMMA edge, Ad and 26 are used for button 5.

/pedanticalness

I recenctly found out that button 5 does have an effect on some MVS games, bizarrely it pauses Garou: Mark Of The Wolves.

As far as actually controlling games,, I can't see anything over four buttons working. If you are sure that you cart has 6 button games then it must either use a kick harness or some kind of bizzaro button combo.

Which cart is it by the way? I know a few people who know a fair bit about the various multicarts and I may be able to find out some further information.

Franco,

It's called a "Transformer ultimate edition 2011" contains a lot of street fighter games.

Back to connecting a pc to my neo geo mvs :), I really do not want to destroy the neo geo 4 slot. I just want to connect a pc to my mvs and emulate only neo geo games on it and maybe some SF games. If I sell it later I want to just disconnect my pc and still be able to sell it as a genuine neo geo cab. (Except for the 2 extra buttons that (as i just learned of cheffojeffo) I can connect to the j-pac.

What do I all need to connect my pc to my neo geo mvs.
What I think, please correct me if i'm wrong!

- J-pac
- Soft15khz (if my videocard supports it) or a ArcadeVGA
- A PC offcourse.

But then Im confused how do I connect the J-pac to the MVS? You can't just plug it in a MVS slot right?

Thanks guys for the replys

Ah .. that isn't an MVS cart, but rather a JAMMA board in a box that looks like an MVS cart (was thinking of buying one at one point because the price was just too good).

Having said that, IIRC, it isn't true JAMMA, but wired like the Atomiswave system Franco B mentioned with a further swap of two of the ground connections for button 6.

So, it won't work in an MVS (especially not a 4-slot) or even a standard JAMMA cab.

You need to disconnect the MVS board from the harness.

MVS 4-slot isn't quite JAMMA, so you would need to rewire a bit.

htttp://hardmvs.com has info on the pinout differences.

Some of the other multi game plugins us jamma for 4 buttons and add the additional buttons as follows.

* 1 - 302-in-1 Classic Arcade Games - Happy Fish 2 JAMMA PCB
* 1 - Button wiring harness for buttons 5 and 6
* 1 - Manual with dip switch settingsBoard includes button 5 and 6 wiring harness.
The Happy Fish 2 board wires to a standard 56 pin Jamma wiring harness. The standard Jamma harness also used for the Jamma 60-IN-1 boards only has wiring for four buttons. The harness adds an additional two buttons for each player and extends the system to six buttons. Note: The Happy Fish boards do no have a VGA output and only use the low resolution RGB output directly from the Jamma wiring harness. If you would like to hook the board to a VGA monitor see our CGA to VGA CONVERTER

If you have a regular Jamma harness there will only by support for 3 action buttons per player. If you have a kick harness on there you'll add 3 more action buttons for a total of 6 per player.

A 4-slot MVS board cannot be used directly with a Jamma harness. It will mess up the audio on the board. You can buy something like this:

http://www.jammaboards.com/store/neogeo-mvs-to-jamma-inline-adapter-mvs2jamma.html

It goes between the MVS mobo and the jamma harness.
