Higher resolution Intro Movies?
« on: April 07, 2012, 12:05:29 am »
I recently found a couple of excellent MAME intro movies at CinemArcade.com:
http://www.cinemarcade.com/movies.html

I especially like 'MAME Arcade' and "3D MAME logo' by Dave Dries. Very cool.

I downloaded the 320x240 mpeg versions and plugged them into MALA to run as intro movies.

Everything worked perfectly however because of the lower resolution and pixel size of the downloaded movies, they tend to get a bit pixelated and blurry when run full-screen at 1024x768 on my monitor.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get either of these excellent videos as higher resolution mpegs? Ideally 1024 x 768 (same 4:3 ratio). I sent an email to Dave Dries but haven't heard back yet.

Any input on this?

Thanks.

I love MaLa, I speak very highly of it and promote it to everyone I know who has/wants a MAME set up.
The fact that I can create my own skins really sold me on MaLa.
But now as I dig deeper, adding my custom load screen, sound effects to my menu, the arcade ambiance project, and MaLa's screensaver option make MaLa sooo much more.
These things truly enhance the entire experience and cabinet as a whole.
With my basement renovated and my new games room populated to a state it will stay in for quite some time the only thing I think I'm missing on my cabinet is a nice intro video. I don't know if people here have looked at my layouts, I do custom work and make many layouts available for the community.
I'd like to create some videos to share also.

If anyone can suggest a program that a novice can used I'd love to take a look.
Ideal would be if I could create the graphics in Photoshop and import them.
Simple animations can work.

Let me know, thanks.

This is an update to my original post here a while back.

In my opinion the best MAME/Arcade Emulation intro videos are done by Dave Dries.

"Arcade '84" and the shorter "MAME Arcade" are awesome.

I recently found out that the highest resolution possible for these videos is 640x480:

http://www.cinemarcade.com/home.html

In Dave's words (see link above):
"I've uploaded the full-resoltion version of Arcade '84 to my Youtube channel. Arcade '84 was originally rendered at 640x480, 25fps and the video shared online since then was half-sized. Back then sharing video online was still new and that was actually a decent sized file. Now more than a decade later I've finally gone back to the original file and uploaded it in the original resolution. The files and software used to create Arcade '84 are now obsolete so this is the best it'll ever get. And I have to admit by today's standards it's pretty rough. The render looks very dated and the increased resolution only serves to point out the many flaws. Some flaws due to the render quality of the software, some due to my inexperience with using it. But it is what it is. I enjoyed creating it back then and I've enjoyed sharing it for more than a decade now."

I was able to get a hold of the "full resolution" 640x480 version of Arcade '84. Let me know if anyone would like it for their cabinet intro. [EDIT: the best quality version I have of this video is actually 480x360. The 640x480 version was more compressed than the slightly smaller version, so what I really have is a 480x360 version. Still better than the original available at cinearcade.com]

I'd still like to get my hands on "MAME arcade" in 640 x 480. I'll keep looking. :)

I'd still love to see something short, crisp, clean and simple.
Something under a minute, something that mentions MaLa and MAME.
Sadly nothing online.

I have no idea what program to use or I'd give it a shot.

If you have a copy of the 640x480 of arcade 84 I would love to have one for my mala-fe

Thanks

Yes, I do.

To download it, go to my blog post here:
http://www.cheapskategamer.com/pc_game_stories_and_news/building-an-arcade-emulation-cabinetpart-one-software/

At the very end of the article I've embeded yet again the You Tube video of "Arcade '84" by Dave Dries.

Just below the video is a short paragraph containing the download link to the "full resolution" video at 640x480.
[EDIT: the best quality version I have of this video is actually 480x360. The 640x480 version was more compressed than the slightly smaller version, so what I really have is a 480x360 version. Still better than the original available at cinearcade.com] That's the highest resolution possible for this video. Have fun.

By the way, I'm working on a 640x480 [EDIT: actually it is 480x 360] re-creation version of "Mame Arcade" by Dave Dries found here: http://www.cinemarcade.com/movies.html

I'm using the 640x480 source files of "Arcade '84" [EDIT: actually the source is 480x360] and redoing it frame for frame. If anyone is interested in this 30 second intro version of "Arcade '84" let me know. I'll be using it will Mala as my arcade intro movie.

I finished my recreation of "MAME Arcade" by Dave Dries at a higher resolution (480x360). Can be seen here:

I had to recreate it because I couldn't find a higher resolution version of it anywhere. 320x240 was the only one available at cinearcade.com

I also created a new derivative work called "Super Arcade" which is essentially my recreation of "MAME Arcade" but with my Super Arcade logo at the end. This was created so I could use the movie with my Mala frontend and have it match the overall cabinet theme/name/logo identity.

This slightly tweaked "Super Arcade" version can be seen here:

As stated before all these videos can be downloaded at the end of the blog article here:
http://www.cheapskategamer.com/pc_game_stories_and_news/building-an-arcade-emulation-cabinetpart-one-software/

Included still in the link above is the "best resolution" version of "Arcade '84" by Dave Dries. Download if interested. The best quality resolution turned out to be 480x360 not 640x480. Unless I can get Dave to send me some UNCOMPRESSED video files for Arcade '84 at 640x480, the 480x360 version is the best looking, best quality version I could glean anywhere.

Subscribed.  When I get home tonight, I'm downloading the new movie.  Thanks all who kept this thing alive.  First time users of ANY MAME arcade that start with either of these movies love them.
