Mame4Droid updated to use .134u4 MAME core.

If you've got a device hefty enough, this looks like it's going to be pretty nice...

Just goofing off with it, and already I found MK2 is playable. It's not running at full FPS on my TF101, but it IS running.  Next stop for me is SF3:TS!  ;D  I've got to learn how to rollback the current .145 set, but I hope to have more to say about this topic this weekend.

Yep I get good frame rates (playable) on my Tegra 2 Tablet.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Somewhat off-topic, but the video for MAME4droid shows a game list with all available games.  I haven't tried either version out yet (and don't have a way to), but I would likely only put maybe 50-100 games on the device.

Is there a way to limit the game list to only ROMS that are available, and/or are there any good frontends for MAME4Droid?

Thanks in advance!!!

The most recent versions only show ROMs that you have. Since he upped the MAME build he's using (it's actually version .139u1 now) it's using the built-in ROM navigator that was added to MAME recently. So yeah, you're all set.

I might add CPS3 games (SF3:TS!!) are playable (not perfect, but playable) with some speed hacks he's added recently - at least on my Transformer tablet. Very, very sweet.  :burgerking:

Thanks - I'm using MAME 110x for the PC (got tired of chasing all the rom updates from version to version), and it played all the games I really cared about - or the ones that I needed it for (SW Trilogy, for example) were too slow on a dual-core AMD.

A couple of follow-up questions:

  • From your reply - I know "MAME4Droid Reloaded" will only show ROMS that I have.  Was the same feature added to "MAME4Droid" (based on the 37b5 core).  I'm thinking about getting a Samsung Galaxy Player and not sure how the performance will be with the later version of MAME (although for vertical shooters and Galaga and Pacman and Tempest, I doubt it matters and that is mainly what I would be interested in.)
  • Still - does anyone know of a frontend for it?  I'm used to EmuLoader or Mame32, and would prefer something similar (gamelist with screenshots) - although I could do without it if I don't have to pick out the 30 games I loaded from the 2000 available.

Thanks again!!!

I don't believe Mame4Droid has been updated since he released the "Reloaded" version so, in essence, no I don't think so.  Quick scrolling (pressing right/left as opposed to up/down) was pretty easy/fast to get through the full list.

I have NO idea about performance on the Galaxy Player, I can't seem to find processor info on it. But I can say, as with desktop MAME, CPU speed is the determining factor. Reloaded is intended for 1ghz procs or better, if I remember correctly...

Good luck with finding a frontend like the ones we're used to here. This one guy seems to be the entire MAME scene on Android.

My personal opinion? Playing classics on a touchscreen SUCKS. Get something that runs Android 3.2 or better, and has a USB port for a controller at least.

It's not really a matter of getting through the list - it's a matter of remember if I had and wanted to play Set 1 or Set 2 of Asteroids and which one is loaded on the MP3 player.

Unnecessarily negative review here - http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/12/galaxy-player-4-0-review/.  It uses a Hummingbird 1 Ghz single-core CPU with 512 MB Ram.  But I know desktop MAME ... - MAME 0.100 wasn't recommended for a 200 Mhz processor, but it would probably be okay for older classic games.

Point taken, but this is just something to kill time with while I am waiting for a pizza or the auto repair shop or similar.  If I have to carry along a controller, I'll just play on my home rig.  The SGP is mainly to be an MP3 player and MAME is just gravy for it ...  (And supposedly there is the option of WiiMote Controller with BT, but again, I'm not carrying two devices with me just to play old games.

Thanks agian!!!

Haha... gotcha. I was thinking from the perspective of just having the complete ROM set on the device and not worrying about which set was loaded.  Even a modest micro sd would hold it (pretty sure it was only a couple of GBs.)

The SGP is mainly to be an MP3 player and MAME is just gravy for it ...

I'm not an Apple guy by any means -- obviously, since I own a TF... -- but if this is a "throwaway" device you're thinking about, why not just buy a 16- or a 32gb iPod Touch?  (maybe a used one or refurb?) You could still get your MAME on, and have the (still) more ubiquitous option for other things too.  Just a thought.
