Any Difference between these two Translucent Trackballs?
« on: March 03, 2012, 04:09:59 pm »
Hi all:  Is there a difference between the following two translucent trackballs (see pics and/or links):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360195117740?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-ILLUMINATED-GREEN-HAPP-TRACK-BALL-BE-DIFFERENT-/360294329905?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e3372e31

Both are green translucent, but the greens look different, darker shade vs. brighter.  Is the brightness/shade the only difference, or can someone tell me if perhaps one is a "filtered" vs. "diffused" light ball?  Any opinions on which may be better? I've heard one that diffuses the light is usually preferred.  Or are these balls identical, just with different angles/lighting in the pics?

Thanks!

It looks as if they are the same trackball. both look like they are happ trackballs. each are sold by twistedquarter which are listed on the eBay site. one is a usb/ps2 hook up and the other is a standard hookup. The difference in colors could just be the angle and lighting used in the different pictures. I use the second one pictured and I like it just fine. I bought a regular one (solid ball) and actually bought a translucent purple juggling ball to put in it and it works just fine. I wanted all light up purple buttons for some reason. They can look different until you light them up as well which i am assuming you want to do.
Hope this helps I'm just rambling now though.

Thanks for your reply and feedback, YoGaBaR.  Interesting that you said you wanted lit purple buttons.  I also want lit purple buttons for one of the player controls on my 4-player control panel, however I have not been able to find any concave translucent purple buttons anywhere.  Have you come across any?  I've even posted a topic about it, but have gotten few responses.

There are solid purple, and some translucent convex 24mm and 30mm purple buttons, but no translucent 28mm concave purple buttons.  The only option suggested is to use clear buttons with an RBG to create purple.  I also wonder if a blue button with a red light (or vice-versa) would create a decent purple?  What have you done to create lit purple buttons?

I did not like the solid purple buttons back lit myself. I had absolutly no luck finding translucent purple buttons at all. As far as I know they still do not make them. I did try the red with a blue and a blue with a red light. They both did not look purple at all. you could still tell they were red or blue. Now I did buy a whole lot of the clear translucent buttons and even joystick shafts hollowed out with clear bubble top balls that had the nut drilled out so a LED could illuminate the ball top as well. After messing around with all the wiring and LED mods even getting a little test block all lit up on a scrap piece of plywood with the joystick and a couple buttons I was still not satisfied. It turned out that they were more of a pastal colored purple and I wanted a deeper darker purple than could be given to me. I did abandon the project and then went for a red vs blue them and the middle trackball would be purple where the colors met. Then I did not like that at all either. So I ended up making the woody cab that is in the link at the bottom of my posts.

All in all I was (still am) picky about the shades of purple I like. I am not a perfectionist at all but I want things to look a certian way. I cannot find the pics I took of the clear translucent buttons as I am thinking they are on a different computer I have formatted a long time ago. I did however build a 60-n-1 cab for my sister where I painted it black with the solid purple buttons and the purple t-molding with custom purple flames on the marquee and cp. It looked pretty neat but then again it was a little light for me.

Now the older style leaf buttons are probly the best I have seen lit up. Knievel has some older project that he used them in orange and light blue that have LEDs mounted on the sides of the buttons instead of the underneath like the pushbuttons that are standard for today. They are just so bright and they really pop. Just my opinion. The new buttons with the super bright LEDs look really bright as well but I have not seen them in person to give a good opinion on them.

Sorry for the rambling again but I hope this helps some. IIRC there was talk a while ago about someone buying a mold and making them but I dont think there was enough interest. Oh yeah I have not looked at buttons in a while but maybe those euro buttons may have something like you want now. They are really small and I think they can only be mounted on a metal CP but might be worth a look. WOW too much info LOL hope other members have some input as well or correct me if I am wrong but remember these are my experiences with my opinions.

After looking on the internet for a while I have come across these
http://www.lizardlick.com/Seimitsu-PS-14-KN-30mm-Pushbutton-Violet_p_506.html

I wonder if you could put an LED in them. they are 30mm which is a hair bigger than the standard pushbutton but these are the closest I have seen to translucent purple. I will keep my eyes out for others. Lizardlick is just for showing an example there are lots of places that have these buttons in stock and sometimes cheaper.

Hi YoGaBaR: Thank you for all of the info with regard to the mixing and matching of buttons trying to produced purple by combining red with blue and blue with red buttons/lights.  I appreciate the feedback on your experience and it saves me the time and money of trying.

I have seen those Seimitsu violet buttons, Paradise Arcade also sells them, and I actually e-mailed Paradise to see if they can do special orders or if they have any of those Seimitsu's with concave buttons, but I have not yet received a response.  If you come across any translucent purple/violet concave buttons keep me posted, and I'll do the same.

Thanks again!
