x-arcade tank stick help
« on: February 29, 2012, 05:23:40 pm »
I am running mame with a hyperspin frontend and am having problems mapping out my console.  I cannot seem to find a good configuration to set my controls too that will work with MOST of the games.  Does anyone have a good map of the keys/buttons configuration tha I can tryout tha will play most of the games?  I am not a very good gamer but am trying to learn and understand the best I can.  Thanks in advance.

I think I confused myself when I read this.

You you talking about mapping the controls for MAME or Hyperspin?

There is a ctrlr folder within your Mame folder that has a number of controller files that may fit the bill for you.  All you need to do is specify it in your mame.ini under core input options.  I use the xarcade file and based on your subject line I would guess that this would work for you.  Some games with unique controllers may require some additional adjustment from within the game but you should be otherwise good to go.

Is there any chance of getting both joysticks to work independently?  They both just seem to work together like a matched pair .  I cannot get them to work independentaly in fighting games with 2-players against each other.

They should work independently provided they are mapped correctly.  Change the controller to xarcade in your mame.ini and see if that works.  You will see it under core input options like this:

#
# CORE INPUT OPTIONS
#
coin_lockout              1
ctrlr                     xarcade
mouse                     1
joystick                  1

I cannot seem to change to the xarcade as I see no options to do so. I found four different controller options but no way to change them.  I am not doing something right im sure.  Can someone guide me to the procedure to find this and hoe/where to change?  Much appreciated.  Thanks all.

OK I found the config file in the mame folder. (config. settings) below is what I have:

#
# CORE INPUT OPTIONS
#
# ctrlr                                  <null> (not set)
mouse                                  1
joystick                                0
lightgun                               0
multikeyboard                                           0
multimouse                                               0
steadykey                             0
offscreen_reload                    0
joystick_map                         auto
joystick_deadzone                  0.3
joystick_saturation                 0.85

I have changed the #ctrlr to xarcade and joystick to 1

still no difference in the joysticks.  Num Lock is on and they either work both together but not independentaly or one not at all.  HELP!!!!!!!

Is the switch on the back of the x-arcade set to the default position?

Either the x-arcade controls were changed to make them both the same (but the switch would have to be set to a position other than default and you'd have to press a button to load the alternative mappings)
or you have the inputs in MAME mapped to both controls.

Do you know how to map controls in MAME?
If not, how did you manage to get Hyperspin and MAME set up?  :police:

Well I am new to all this and just learning.  I do no how to map the controls via the keyboard.  I can get the buttons to work on specific games but now I cannot get the tab key to open up to change player controls however the switch is set in the back to default or other three positions.  I am kind of stuck now without the tab working to open up each game.

Also remove the # sign from your ctrlr setting.  Otherwise, it will only see it as a remark instead of an actual setting.

I removed the # sign and I got both controllers to work.  Great.  Somehow I need to get back to using the tab to get into the config of the game but it doesnt seem to let me in anymore.  Am I missing something or have I screwed something up?  Any way to do a reset back fo factory conditions so I can start over mapping out on the other three settings and get me back to normal?

See this thread if you are missing your tab key function.
