Burning smell from monitor
« on: February 25, 2012, 11:51:47 am »
I recently had a new flyback and capkit installed on my monitor. Now when I plug it on, 2 things happen and I'm not sure if they are normal (I'm a arcade monitor n00b)

  • The monitor needs to warm up. The image will flicker a few times and the brightness flickers as well. In fact, it looks like I cranked up the brightness or contrast. After 15 minutes it stops and the blacks return to blacks and the image stays put
  • There is a smell. Smells like burning wires/ozone. That lasts for about 15 minutes as well, but the smell lingers for a long time

It's a K7000 series 25" monitor. Any ideas?

is your clip for the high voltage lead firmly in the bellybutton? sometimes you only get one side of the clip in there and all sorts of weird things can happen.

to put it on i recommend turning the suction cup inside out and placing your pointer finger in by the wire and your middle and thumb pinching the suction cup to your pointer finger... insert clip into bellybutton and release.

that way you can see that the clip 100% is in the bellybutton.

Thanks dude. Definitely corrected the burning smell. Still getting some flicker issues, but not as bad.

If it's an old monitor, try turning the brightness and/or contrast up and down a couple times, then adjust to suit.  It could be some crud in the control that keeps it from making proper contact until some heat from the chassis gets to it.  Do the same thing with the HV control on the flyback, but don't crank it, just turn it up and down a little.  Outside of that, it could be that one of the caps, or other components, just needs to warm up before it starts working properly.  As a side note, you always want to let a CRT warm up about 30 minutes before adjusting the picture.  Nature of the beast.
