MAME Cocktail help
« on: February 23, 2012, 11:20:33 pm »
I got rid of my 60 in 1 for my cocktail because I wanted more flexibility.  MAME works awesome except for a few games don't rotate properly.  2 of the games I would really like to play, Galaga and Burgertime both don't look right on player 2.  I've tried this on my cocktail and my upright and have the same result.  Can anyone confirm that these games are just broken in cocktail mode, or is there a setting somewhere?  Thanks!

Ed.

Try making a change to the dip switch in the game you want to flip in cocktail.  Do not use the cocktail setting in the video attributes as it if for games that do not flip P1 and P2 in cochktail.

and

apparently these are known bugs. Isn't MAME great!  :dunno

Perhaps using an earlier version/romset will get you where you need to be... I had to use two versions of MAME on my cab and it isn't even a cocktail...
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

both galaga and btime work great in cocktail mode in earlier revs (like 135 or so)
I have had both on my cocktail for a couple years; (mine is an old galaga machine, so it HAS to play galaga!)
So you may get yourself into a situation where depending on the game, your FE will need to launch a different version of mame.

Thanks for the heads up on on those bugs sometimes the latest is not the greatest.  How do they succeed in breaking things that have been working forever in MAME?  I have not seen the problem as I am way back at 139.

My old cocktail was running something like version .33 (from 1998) and it also didn't have that problem.

One reason why I always recommend the relatively ancient mame version of .55. That version is incredibly fast, supports basically every game you remember, and it doesn't have any important bugs, at least not major ones in major titles.

Thanks.  I went to 139 and it fixed Burger Time but not Galaga.  I went way back to 100 and Galaga works but it loads pretty slow.  I guess I'll start splitting the difference and get as new as I can while maintaining the games I like.  I wonder why 100 loads so slow compared to 139?

Galaga was fixed in .144u1, I have that build running on my cocktail and galaga is perfect in cocktail mode.

Galaga, Dig Dug and Burger Time all work in the newest MAME.  I thought I was pretty recent.  Funny (awesome) that they just fixed it.  Hopefully most of my classic games will flip properly now...

< breathes a sigh of relief.  :o
Galaga is one of the main things I'll want to be playing on my cocktail
