LED Rope Light
« on: February 14, 2012, 04:16:10 pm »
Just wondering if anyone has used LED rope lights to light their marquee.  I have a very small area for lighting because of how the speakers will be mounted.  I also need it to be 120v as I cannot connect any 12v devices to the motherboard/power supply.  This seems like a good solution.  Whadaya think?

Are you able to aim the LEDs?

You might get inconsistent lighting in there if you can't.

I've used this on three cabinets and they work wonderfully.  http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=307

Just wire it up with a 12V wall transformer.

I don't know....from the rope lights I have, they are kinda dim. I think they make a super bright ones though, but don't know where to get them. They make some pretty slim florescent fixtures these days, I'd check if you can make some of those "under cabinet" fixtures for bathrooms and kitchens to fit.

What you want to get is a reel of led strips

I just started playing with these recently, and they are amazing.  You can grab a 16 foot reel for around $14 giving you plenty to use wherever you need.  It is directional and probably the slimmest light source you could ever use for a marquee, probably less than 1/4" thick.

I used it to ad light to my kitchen by running it along some molding, going to add it to the underside of my stair handrails, and soon will be attempting something really crazy involving my cab although saving the reveal for another time.

As for power, look in your box of old electronics.  You probably have a 12V power source you can use to power it laying around.

My cabinet with led strips behind the speaker grilles.  They're plenty bright.
