« on: September 23, 2003, 07:05:01 pm »
Don't know if it's been posted yet, but I just recieved my new issue of electronic gaming monthly and it has an article about building your own 'home arcade' where it mentions arcadecontrols.com... :)  Pretty Cool!

Uh oh!

"What's the best joystick?"
"I've downloaded MAME but I can't play any games, what are these ROM things?"
"What's better TV, PC monitor or arcade monitor?"
"KeyWhiz or IPAC I just can't decide, what do you guys think?
"Can someone send me all their ROMS?"

LOL

I'd be slow to discourage newbies and quick to welcome them.  One of them could be the next best mamer(cabinet builder) of all time.

Arrgh! You beat to the post DeathMonk!  Oh well.   :)

Don't worry about a total wave of newbies since the article was pretty vague (basically it just said get a computer, install MAME, tweak options, play) with a little P.S. on putting it inside a cabinet (where the reference to arcadecontrols.com appears).  It was quite dissapointing actually.  What I thought was going to be a full blown article ended up being a space filler EGM described numerous times before (the feature on collecting Arcade Cabinets a while back, the emulation Instant Expert...)

Since I still consider myself a newbie (or n00be or nu-be or whatever) I like to think I try to represent other newbies positively by having at least read the contents of the website before posting questions.  Although I'm still hitting myself over the head with my original "I want to stick everything on one control panel" post...

I was just joking... I was (and in some since, still am) a newbie (as I'm still tring to finish my first cab.)  I can just remember being one of the newbies who asked where to find ROMS and it was like I called down fire from Heaven  :o....hehe... ahh the good old days..hehe

Wow, such cynicism...

I wouldn't worry too much about a newbie blitz. The emulation "gold rush" is over until this generation's consoles become emulated. Besides, the whole notion of building a cab has limited appeal. Joey Romgrabber Jr. doesn't want furniture.

Lighten up, folks. Life is more enjoyable if you are an optimist.

It's in the November issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (subscribers get their issues a little early :)).  The article isn't really worth scanning because all it says is "for help, go to arcadecontrols.com".  Kind of dissapointing, but at least this hobby is getting some recognition.

Given the fact that a lot of us here are adults with jobs who can  barely afford this hobby, and given the fact that a lot of the readers of EGM are high school kids with no income, I doubt there will be much interest in this sort of stuff once they see the price tag.

Exceptions apply of course.

I think they did a study where it was found that the average EGM readers age was 26.

just for the hell of it - when does a person graduates from being a newbie.  Is it when he finishes his cabinet, or when he stops asking questions that have been answered a thousand times before?  Or is it something else, because I still consider myself a newb - even though i have a beautiful cabinet, and only asked 1 or 2 questions.
maybe its after complete your 3rd cabinet?

I guess, given only two choices I still consider myself a newbie even though I can answer all those questions.  My cab is only about 3/4 finished and since school started a month ago I haven't been able to touch it.  I just think the idea of newbies and veterans is embarrassing.  It reminds me of the cooties business from elementary.  If a question is "beneath" your majestic veteran status don't answer it.  It's a bit narcissictic to hope that every post on a message board will live up to a single person's hopes or standards.
At any rate, this whole, "Oh no!  A newbie..." stuff annoys me.  I asked those questions.  I imagine that the "idiot police" himself had to ask those questions at one time.  Or not.  Who cares?  I'd hang out with a dumb or ignorant person any day of the week over a mean person.

Man some of us are real cocky..  ;D
Most of the resources on this website is to help newbies, and very little the experts.
Even though I had my can since almost a year, I still consider myself a newbie, just because..there is so many things to learn and do.

however, some of the above posts are funny  :D

Im still a newb... i've only built a test desktop cp (I'm still using it until i can finally get a real cab to convert) so I'll consider myself a "non-newb" once I've actually finished building/converting an upright cab of my very own... the only other way I'd consider myself not to be a newb was if I responded to the posts with helpfull criticism or advice (which i haven't... i joke around too much and I can't really give advice until i get more experience from building my own cab)... just my $0.02

I think noob, nub, etc... is used in the euphamistic sense.

beginner hobbyist !== nub

There's nothing wrong with being a neophyte to the BYOAC order

There's something a little rude about not displaying any message board etiquette  (manners lessons from rampy? for shame - is that four horseman on white horses I see!)

It's ok to not know something. It's ok to ask... better of course to search/browse/lurk... best is to compile the info you found into a howto or helpful links post/stickie/webpage to share what you learned/compiled.

I dunno... I like helping people (no really) with questions, regardless of how beginner they are in the hobby... but what I don't like is someone who wants me to research/make design decisions for them (i.e. which joystick is best type questions)

My other pet peeve (this thread is all about me and my pet peeve's right?) is incomprehensible questions or those lacking sufficient/relevant details... but i believe someone posted a thread about that already...

*cue National Geographic music and british accent*

"So observe, if you will, the cycle of the Newb (latin: Nu-Be ) : First is the bombarding of beginner questions such as, 'How fast of a CPU do I need for MAME???? and WINDOWS OR DOS???'.  Newbs are immediately identified by overuse of the Caps-Lock button and question marks.  Then, once comfortable with his newly found arcade knowledge, he begins to tentatively answer the same questions he just asked mere months ago.  Finally, to complete the cycle, he metamorphasizes into that most prized status: the Veteran, or Regular, if you like; and through a social gaming ritual he convinces his friends to build a Mame cab, simultaneously creating more Newbs and further establishing himself as an Expert, and thus the circle of life continues..."   ;D

Someone could write a FAQ, and every time some "N00b" asks a question, we could all type "RTF" and make some sort of jerky comment about it (ALA MAME.NET forum) or we could just deride and belittle the poster while giving no answers at all (ALA Retrogames forum). Then we would have a core group of people who discuss amongst themselves, just like the afore mentioned sites.

We would all have our cabinets built, and we could talk about important things. Like quilting. At least we would be noob free. Who has time to answer questions, anyway?

Don't worry karish7 these guys are just messing around. This forum has one of the highest "noob" tolerance thresholds of any forum on the net IMHO.
As long as someone has made a reasonable effort to read the FAQ and use the search function ( dodgy as it may be ) then you will find almost 100% of this forum ready and willing to answer any questions you may have.
Be polite, use your head and you will find this forum a most enjoyable place to be  :)

As long as someone has made a reasonable effort to read the FAQ and use the search function ( dodgy as it may be ) then you will find almost 100% of this forum ready and willing to answer any questions you may have.

I have to agree with that. I know for one, when I started this deal, I spent quite some time researching and learning on my own without simply asking to be handheld through things cause I was too lazy to look for myself.

The information is out there and there are some mint tutorials. You just have to take the initiative to look.

My 2 cents.
