Are The xxx in 1 pcb's ......
« on: February 06, 2012, 01:24:15 pm »
I guess I don't know the answer to my question...but...

I already have a mame cabinet and a very nice custom multi-MK machine, but I was thinking about making a bartop machine...
The only downfall to a bartop machine in my eyes is small control panel means less real estate to put trackball, spinner, more buttons..hence, I could only use a fraction of the games out there.  I took alook at the xxx in 1 pcb's but never played on one yet alone seen one with my own eyes I'm very skepital.  I've been using MAME basically from the time I saw it on ATMOSPERICAL HEIGHTS (ohh yeah...waaay back)...and been a fan and have been keeping up on it since day 1.   I know you cannot sell MAME...hence my question :  Are the xxx in 1 pcb's use mame to emulate the games? and/or the profit from the roms?  Is that why those PCB's such a NO NO? If so, then there is NO WAY IN HELL I would ever buy one.  I have always respected the wishes of the DEV's.

I have no problem trying to cram a micro atx mobo/cpu/ect into a bartop but thought it might just be easier just to buy one of the xxx in 1 boards.

Just wanted to know what the deal is before I make my decision.

Thanks in advance guys....

Sav..

Yes and yes.

XXX and XXXX are MAME on a PC with a JAMMA interface. XX are an early MAME build on a chip.

Ok, thanks for the info CJ..
Not buying one...I'll have more customability with a mobo/cpu setup.
thanks again

Dave's is now called VG-gaming.

I liked Zophar's Domain (spelling?)

Wait until Raspberry Pi comes out and then you can make all kinds of tiny projects.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Honor amongst thieves....

A fair statement ... I have used both 48-in-1 and 60-in-1 to replace vertical MAME cabs. If there was a reasonably-reliable XXX-in-1 with games I want, I would drop it into my MultiJAMMA.

I would love to drop MAMEDevs some bucks for each board I use, but that isn't an option.

Hm… I really don’t think it is more or less honest to have a MAME PC compared to a 60-in-1 PCB in my cabinets.
Yes, there was some Chinese dudes breaking some MAME rules when putting it on a PCB and sell it. But from my point of view I am paying them for the trouble of building a tailored computer for arcade usage, rather than paying them for profiting on the MAME devs hard work.
In a perfect world somebody would build a PC motherboard with a JAMMA connector, that you install and configure everything yourself. Maybe there is a business case in doing that…

You mean like a JPAC?

Not really, but you are right from one point of view. But it isn't the same as a board with everything integrated.
A 2012 version of this with more RAM, better CPU and a good gfx chipset (same as ArcadeVGA?) would be more convenient.
With a stripped down OS and a SSD it would probably boot faster than the 60-in-1 boards.
