Encoms DOT Cabaret
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:44:05 pm »
With my last project basically completed of the Tron Encoms Video Pinball 2.0 (more updates to come)http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=103778.0

its time to get started on the next one.
Since I've given hope on finding a DOT/EDOT not to mention the space needed for one
I decided to use a Bally/Midway cabaret style cabinet, which is also a similar cab as a Cabaret Tron
which Ill transformed into a cabret version of Discs of Tron.
Which will also complement the size nicely next to my Video Pinball 2.0
and will run Discs of Tron Mame, Space Paranoids (offline) and Tron 2.0 light cyles.

The Cabinet
I had this cabaret cab a gutted MsPac which was converted to a duck hunt of all things.
which was rotted beyond repair :'( but will make for some great templates to build a new one.
I want an identical cabinet in size and build so as to accomindate all other original parts and fits.

good grief - anything worth saving there? surely some magic is going to be needed to restore this guy...
My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

Yay you're back at it!  :applaud:
Your video pinball was just amazing, and this one sounds great too!

Poor cabaret you got there, but at least it's not going entirely to waste if it's giving you an opportunity to template.

Looking for to the progress!

not much, the partical board is pretty shot but decent enough to make some new templates.
Some of the hardwoods are savable which have alot of special cuts and routes so that will save some time.
theres also alot of the hardware intact coin doors, retainers, cp lockdowns, etc. that are all good.

So once the cab is rebuilt its on to the art and fortunatly pretty much all of the Discs of Tron art is available or Ive allready done it for others. Though the smaller size will need it all customized to fit.
except for this piece which fits almst perfect the inner art from the Enviromental.

I love these things!  This cab is rough, but it would be worth my effort just for the possibility of an accurate template, and layout!

You're other build was sick... and I love anything TRON.  Can't wait to see this progress.

Yeah as soon as Ive got it all drawn out Ill be happy to post the cabinet plans
I may not draw up all the special cuts and routes but the basic cut list will at least be available.

my original plan was to do the DOT in the cabret Tron/MsPac cab and Space Paranoids in a caabret Pac/SpaceZap
but couldnt find the cab or plans for the cabert Pac/SZ  :'(

So decided to just do a multi in the same cab
Im not a big fan of "Multi" art, so my approach is still to do this as a dedicated DOT even though Midway never made one.
My basic design/concept of art pieces for the build minus the side art which Im still working on.

The Marquee
The first piece of art I need to create is the marquee.
The cabret marquees are unique they're 1/8" bent acrylic

Which makes it difficult for 2 reasons.
One the original DOT marq both upright and Enviros  are hologram type translights mounted behind a glass marquee front.

2nd that design wont fit in the same ratio, theres only 5" of marquee height before the bends.
I stumbled across a thread on KLOV on factory cut EDOTs and found the marquee design used very interresting
A thin long cross breed of both the DOT logo and square shaped light traces and a orginal Tron marquee

So laying out some basic vectors and fonts

note the difference between using the online "font" and a real Tron Font logo.

online "Tron font" pic above modified font below.
this was also mentioned in my Encom/Tron Video Pinball post
most notibly is the weight of the letters and the center cutaway is off on most letters of that online font :'(
but after some reworking I got something just about ready

I like the marquee you put together, but I don't know if I'm sold on the amount of overall yellow being used. I like in your original translit image that the bordering/framing lines are two colours, green and red. But your image has full yellow with yellow font outlines. Might be too much overall. Thoughts?

theres no yellow in any of these graphics. :dunno
maybe your reffering to the yellow outlines I used over the orginal DOT marquee?
Which is not being used
thats only for reference shown so you could see the tracing over the orginal light traces and font
this one I found random on the net looks like a cleaned up version of the orginal. since the scan is so poor due to the hologram effects.

So the marquee once printed and formed will be something like this

I be screenprinting the marquee simialr to how I did the Glass Encom Tron marquees
except I will be printing on acrylic so it can be formed and will try experimenting with some
Floursent Blacklight inks on the marquee as well this time round.
for those that missed that process you can see some of it here

The Control Panel Overlay
Got the art just about finished for the control panel basically a scaled down and modified orginal DOT cpo
which needed to acomidate the trackball needed for Space Paranoids.

I will be screen printing this new cpo just like my regular Discs of Tron Cpo (now sold out)
with blacklight reflective flouresent inks.

though I dont understand why Encom / Disney put the trackball on the right ???
with both Tron and Discs of Tron Joystick Righthand and spinner left.

I plan on mounting mine center (2 1/4" TB) with the Tron stick and spinner
in about the same config and distance as the orginal Upright.

and for the trackball I thought Id give this purdy illuminated TB a spin from ParadiseArcade

The Marquee
The first piece of art I need to create is the marquee.
The cabret marquees are unique they're 1/8" bent acrylic

Maybe Tron is different in the marquee area. I have a Tron Cabaret that was converted to a Trivia Whiz. I'm collecting pieces to restore it to original. The marquee is a piece of plexi lit from behind just like most other cabs. From looking in the manual that's how it is supposed to be. Just an observation.

Yep the Tron cabaret had a reg marquee pretty sure it was glass like the upright though.
though to find.
not sure why the MsPac and Galagas did the bent plexi but it does save on the need of marquee brackets

Since I rebuilding the cab I could go either way on this marquee

We tried to frum up interest in a mini Tron marquee repro and I would print on glass
and do it as an Encom version like I did the upright.
But unfortunatly there just wasnt enough interest at the time to do them.

The Side Art
A couple of very ROUGH side art concepts.
A little undedcided on mixing the 2 or just keeping a dedicated mini DOT look.
and will proably be printing on the same light reflective vinyl I did on the VP2.0

Hey Rich,

Send me the original DOT controller hardware and I will verify it works with the LONO USB adapter and ship it back to you configured and ready to go.  Luck for you, I still have my "special" copy of Space Paranoids offline!

*edit*

Send me the trakball too and I'll make sure that works as well.  Need any custom lighting controls for the cab?

Hey Xray2!!! on a side note Xray helped me with all the VP2.0 hardware and code hack and really helped bring that game to the net level.  :notworthy:

Quote
Need any custom lighting controls for the cab?

are we talking cp buttons or cabinet lighting? EDOTs had light sequencers and the blacklights inside the cab would react to the game play shutting on and on when you got hit.

controls being boxed up and sent your way for further mame testing

Reproducing the CABINET

Now I couldve just traced out the cab shape and simply cut it out
but since these plans arnt avaiable and I needed specific cabinet art shaping digitally I needed to draw it up.
So a quick tutorial on Cabinet reproduction. member DPwitz actually has a good tutorial on this over on KLOV
for more indepth coverage for those interested.
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=224230

But here are the basics
First I did a paper template of what was left of the orginal cabinet side.

squaring up on a table, then marking all of the main Points for size, angles, etc.
So for example: Starting in lower left corner of the table 0",0" working up from there
the next point (top point, left) measures 0" x 23 1/16" so each point is measured for a Vertical and horizontal posistion.
all based from the same origin so those meaurements can simply be added to a vector program
via Cad, Corel, Illustrator, etc. all as X,Y cordinates.

Next Ill be adding the locations/angles for the control panel holds, speaker shelf and bezel angle
in a similar way to the layout plans. I wont be doing every routed detail and blocking but will make all the basic cab plans avaiable.

Sounds like a plan.
On a side note Xrays helping me with a cool idea and will have the cp lights and possibly some cabinet lighting change
depending on with Tron game is running. So for example:
Dot- trackball and player start buttons will all light BLUE
Space Paranoids- trackball and player start buttons will all light RED
Tron 2.0 Light Cyles- trackball and player start buttons will all light GREEN

Ran a test print on some velum to check the cabinet profile and line work for the art.
It was DEAD ON! 8)

The DOT sideart is about dialed in and just need to fine tune the Space Paranoids side.
But Im pretty sure Ill be going this route as it will proably acompany the Encom Video Pinball 2.0
to some of the west shows, CAX, NW Game Show, etc.

Maybe another color or cycle of colors while the cab is sitting at the game selection menu?

Received the controls you sent down but the optical encoder for the spinner was not included.  I don't see it in the original pictures either so..... well..... we need one.  See if you can scrounge one up and if not I will talk to a local (that guy you shipped FF board to this week) about letting me borrow his DOT encoder and I will build you a reproduction encoder with USB adapter.

Yeah missing the opti board one solution suggestion would be adapting the standard Tron board
new repros are aviable.

I got the nicemite button boards today so will send those your way next to tie in.

One cool thing Ill be doing I dont think was posted yet.
the trackball lights switchable RGB and so do the above light boards.
So depending on which game is loading will change the light color display which each Game.
So for example when Playing Space Paranoids Trackball and start buttons will light RED
DOT-Blue and LightCycles2.0 GREEN
Saving the Planet one Game at a time.

Rich,

Still waiting on those additional parts but I did play with the trackball lighting this evening.  I found a simple and effective lighting solution using an external RGB led from paradise arcade shop.  Note that I removed the original LEDs from inside the trackball controller.

Power consumption was good and you have a really nice and very bright red/green/blue solution.  We may even need to dial the luminescence down a bit (see last photo).

I would REALLY love to get the cabinet plans/dimensions from you. I can't seem to find one of these cabinets for measuring.

This project is amazing by the way. I love the old/school custom stuff. Your Tron Video Pinball custom cabinet was equally redonkulous. This thing is going to be unreal. I wish I could silkscreen my own artwork for a project!

Keep up the great work!! :)

I had a chance to look at the encoder from the Kosmik Krooser over the weekend and found one of the two IR channels on the OPB4453 photointerruptor had failed.  This resulted in the spinner only registering movement in one direction (no reverse spin!).

The replacement for the OPB4453 is the OPB882S but I did not have any on-hand.  However I did have multiples of the single QVE11233 and was able to successfully replace the OPB4453 with a pair of QVE11233 photointerruptors.
