Help! Games play with Mame32 but not with Mame...

Hey all, sorry for the Noobs questions but I can't figure it out since days!

I installed the latest version Mala with Mame v144 and copied some ROMS into the ROM folder. Most of them (especially the older ones like PacMan, Donkey Kong, Pengo etc.) won't work and the log files show that some files are missing in the zip...

The problem is that the same ROMS work perfectly with Mame32! So why would they not work with command-line Mame? I just don't get it.
I also tried to use Mame32 instead of Mame under Mala, but Mala seems not to like Mame32 as it bombs out with an error message.

You must be using an older version of mame32. 
As mame is updated some roms change, files are added that improve emulation but make the game unplayable on older versions of mame.

You either need to update your roms or try older versions of mame.

Thanks for your kind reply! Oh I didn't know that ROMS of old games are being updated as well... Ok, I will try to find newer ROM versions and try them again with MAME 144 to see if any luck.
It is just so weird that they work with MAME32 but not with MAME. I tried MAME 144, 132 and 112. They all didnt work. Maybe I have to go back further?

marc it sounds like you and i are about at the same points of setting up our make cabs, and dealing with the same issue. fortunately 98% of the roms I'm using work with the latest command line mame but i have at least one that I know of that doesn't and thats 1943:Battle of Midway.

I'm bummed too because i really like that game. it TOTALLY works in mame32 though. mame32 sees it as the US version but CL Mame sees it as the Euro version. same rom. really weird. I haven't tried an older version of CL Mame yet but I will, unless someone releases an updated version of 1943. I only have about 100 roms loaded in (working with CL mame with Maximus Arcade frontend) but I'm just getting started.

anyway, i'd love it if you kept us (read: me) abreast of your findings because it totally helps me as I slog through setting up my make cab. (its a love/frustration thing). Hopefully i can share some breakthroughs that might assist you!
