grossly over estimated the power of my netbook
« on: January 14, 2012, 10:19:44 pm »
I bought a hp dm1-4010us 11 inch laptop. it has a AMD-E450 1.65 cpu a AMD 6320 gpu and 8 gigs of ram and a 320 7200rpm hard drive. Ive owned netbooks in the past so I knew what to expect. It was definitely better then an intel atom machine. I thought to myself, what the heck. if i dont like it i can throw it in my pacman coctail. well that isnt going to happen. it couldnt even run castlevania. it was pitiful. I dont know if its because im running 144 or what. the machine wont run 99% of the games. it sucks. I am so disappointed with the machine now. I guess for the 350 i paid for it i shouldnt expect much. but still. sigh.

Try using an older MAME version.

Yeah go for an older version.  I'm using an ancient ITX Epia board running somewhere around 400MHz and it plays all the classics great.

I use .132 and .139 with Intel atom single and dual cores and most classics play fine and many of the other games such as NeoGeo. The only problem area I have consistantly is when using CHDs although Area51 works well and some of the other less demanding CHDs.

Something has to be wrong somewhere. I run mame, snes, genesis/megadrive etc on a flexatx sized pc with the following specs

p4 era celeron 1ghz with no CPU level cache
512mb ddr1 pc3200
40gig 5400rpm drive
on board intel 845i graphics

I can easily play roughly 70% of games without ever touching a single setting.

Something may not be playing well with mame on that machine (no pun intended) Try a different mame derivative, check your cpu load and memory usage.

Yeah, something doesn't seem right. My MAME machine is some 7-8 year-old PC with single core and 1gig RAM that I bought used for dirt cheap. It runs the classics like a champ, and even plays some proto-3D games like Tekken and Xevious 3DG no problem.

wow you guys were right. my machine was acting really weird. so i did a minimum factory restore. started up mame and it played every game i tried perfectly. I cant figure out for the life of me what caused my issue before. it kept saying my processor was at 25% use but nothing was listed under task manager. everything was really slow. Im glad I did the restore. Its like a whole different machine. woohoo!

Yeah, that sounds so much better. Something must have been throttling you there. Glad you got it sorted.

Thanks. Its running very smooth now. I tested even more games as some stuff was restored. Neo geo and everything was working perfectly and smooth. I dont know if I had a trojon or what but its gone now. I just hope I dont accidently put back what nerfed my system.
