Larger IR sensor bar for AIMTrak?
« on: January 08, 2012, 03:12:06 am »
Would I be able to use the gun closer to the screen if I get a larger IR sensor bar?  Such as:

I think this might be something Andy might have to look into as the current sensor bar he uses would be fine for your traditional Arcade 4:3 display, but when your start using it with a 40" + LCD display it can becomes a bit of a problem. If this is something Andy is considering i would happly try a prototype out and give feedback, after all it can only help sales if he offers 2 different sensor bars?

I don't know about closer to the screen.  But all of the guns appear to be Aimtrak internals, so the super LED bar should work with an existing Aimtrak setup.

However, I think I recall that what really lets you get closer to the screen is really the field-of-view of the sensor in the gun itself and the angle that the LEDs are mounted at relative to the gun.

It sounds to me like the "Super" LED bar is really just a higher power LED bar that lets you get further away for a large screen, rather than closer up for a smaller one.

Andy gave me an answer to this via email, as I had also asked him about it directly:

"The larger bar would be OK for a larger screen, not smaller. The gun cannot be used closer as the field of view of the sensor is 60 degrees and that is what defines the distance. If closer it would lose sight when aimed at the edges."

(Thanks for the quick replies Andy.)

Interesting.  I'm planning on a front projection shooting setup for my next project.  This might be useful.
