Canadian duties

For those canadians who travelled over the border to pick up thier machines, what kind of brokerage & taxes did you pay on your way back?

I am thinking of picking up a pinball machine (hey, its arcade related! ) and do not want to get raped at the border.  Thanks!

You have no idea!  I ordered from Happs... 40% broker, not including 15% tax!!  

On the bright side, because the pins are made in USA I can get the seller to sign a Certificate of Origin and It should be duty free at the border.  God Bless Nafta..  (when it works).

Ok first thing you do is even if the machine is working PULL OUT THE BOARDS!!! and put them in a seprate box. When the under-sexed customs ---daisies--- ask you about the machine tell them that the machine is for parts only. That way you won't get charged hardly anything at all..

always get *everything* sent CanadaPost/USPS...You'll only Pay a $5  fee for them collecting whatever duty/taxes they have to collect for Revenue Canada ...not like UPS who charge a $35 hidden "Brokerage Fee" plus whatever duties/taxes..

I never understood why when you buy a used item from any store in Canada, you pay close to no tax, but when you buy used from the US the taxes are equivalent to brand new...

go figure.. customs suck.. but I guess they need to pay for the free helath care, and darn cheap education somehow...

Huh, I just ordered 2 X Competion sticks and a Pacman/Galaga 4 way from Happ. Yhe order was $46 the shipping to NZ $27!!! Man it sux trying to MAME in NZ!

Let us know how it goes if/when you bring the pinball across.  I was thinking about doing the same thing, but probably not until next year.  I'm curious as to what they will charge.  It should be only GST, no duties, but you can never be sure.

I just brought a fully working q-bert across with a receipt showing how "little" I paid for it--then declared that its for personal use and no taxes, no duty--If you can--go down for a weekend or overnight--they are much less excited for overnighters than day-trippers.  Hope that helps--feel free to express your gratitude with another pinball machine--I mean since you're bringing one back....

I wish I could save myself a long drive and just have it shipped with no duty though.
