Driving games with a joystick
« on: December 24, 2011, 10:08:03 pm »
Since Maws is down I'm hoping some people wouldn't mind recommending some driving games that can be controlled easily with a joystick.
From my tests so far I have...
1000 miles rally
ivan stewarts off road
bad lands
blomby
championship sprint
indy heat

What others could you recommend that are easily controlled with a joystick?

False is appropriate.  Theres no way you are going to play Championship Sprint Easily with a Joystick.  It used a 360 degree wheel (spinner).   It would be nearly impossible.   Likewise, most of the others listed are also in the same boat.  You need at minimal, a good spinner, to control the cars well.

You could get away with a game like Outrun... which used Pots for steering...  Not optical encoders.

I don't know, I do pretty good playing testing them with just my keyboard.
Obviously no true to the arcade experience and I do eventually want to have a steering wheel setup but that is low on the priority list right now.

Look under the WHEEL column for the ones that say Joystick.  :)

The ones that say ANY can be switched to use a joystick in the game's service menu.
For a some of the older games, you might have to flip a dip-switch to access the service menu.

You might be able to get the others somewhat playable by tweaking the DIGITAL SPEED and DIGITAL CENTER (or something like that) in MAME's analogue controls menu in-game, but it will take a lot of tweaking and will never play like the ones meant for a joystick.
Any adjustment that begins with "DIGITAL" changes how the game reacts when key/button/joystick presses are substituted for analogue inputs.

Honestly, I don't think any driving games can be easily controlled with a joystick.  Especially not 360o driving games.
