Wii U - what would you pay

Lets assume the following:

Comes bundled with one controller, and one game, probably a ---smurfy--- one.

There's a gap in your choices: under $200 and then $300 - $400.  Where's $200 - $300 (which incidentally would be my choice)?

And why are you so crazy obsessed with the Nintendo business model lately? Why don't we wait until they actually announce the final configuration and package contents before spending threads upon thread of conversation making wild guesses?

Under $200. Unless it comes with a sequel to Wind Waker, in that case $600. I went there! Bring the hate! :jerry
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

That's a pretty crazy assumption considering the Wii came bundled with one of the best launch titles ever.  (Wii Sports).

Actually, looking back every single nintendo console that launched with a game included, came with a good one.

NES: GYROMITE/Duck Hunt and later SMB /Duck Hunt.
SNES:  SMW
Wii:  Wii Sports

Hmm.... those were the more successful consoles as well.

Yeah the trend regarding Donk and the WiiU/Nintendo business model is funny, but Im bored at work, and it gives me something to do.

Personally, it depends on the games... Like I mentioned in the other thread, if Retro Studios does in fact do the next Zelda, I will buy this thing. The metroid series is so great on the Wii with Prime, I dont really think it could get any better. Other M was trash in my opinion. I dont know what to expect from the next Mario game, because I couldnt play galaxy, because it made me motion sick. So, Im really only banking on Zelda here. Im such a hardcore fan Ill buy it JUST for that.  ;D

Under $200. Unless it comes with a sequel to Wind Waker, in that case $600. I went there! Bring the hate! :jerry
 :whap :puke
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Don't forget the original Gameboy with Tetris. Smart move on their part. It moved millions of those handhelds.

I voted $300-400, but that is only due to the lack of a $200-300 option. Though I am more in a $200-250 range. :P

I do wonder about the pack-in thing... look at Mario and Sonic... why modern systems don't come with a game is beyond me, as it almost guarantees a successful game franchise, as long as the games are good. Surely the investment is worth it (the original DS should have had Kirby's Canvas Curse packed in, IMHO.)

Fixed the poll

Gyromite was not a great game, most people don't know it WAS a game, 90% of people that played it thought the robot was stupid.   Wii sports is not a great game - its something that is fun for a while, there is no depth to it.  HOWEVER I will give credit where credit is due in that it really is the reason anyone ever bought a wii, and sadly wii bowling remains the strongest reason to own one now.  Both of your examples are more or less glorified demos for novelty controllers.

SMB, now THAT was a great game and Super Mario World for the SNES really was a fantastic game, I fired that up the other, I forgot how awesome that thing was.

I am probably thinking this thing doesn't come with a game, since the 3DS didn't, the gamecube didn't and there as been zero buzz about it shipping with a game, but who knows.  Maybe there will be a port of the Zelda game, like how the wii came with a port of the gamecube one.  That is another thing to consider, what is going to be out for it?  Considering a new mario kart and zelda just dropped.

Metroid?  I say go all in on Star Fox.

Yeah its the third topic, bust ---my bottom--- when I post as many things about Nintendo as there are "should I get a U360" threads.

I am genuinely interested in the blindingly devoted fans that refuse to see the flaming wreck that is going to be Nintendo in 2012

Great games don't need to have "depth" or even a story line. Great games are those that you have fun with. For you, fun games require this thing you call depth. For me, sometimes just make me laugh or have fun with my non-gamer friends, sometimes provide interesting fighting mechanics and good music in a fighting game. Every now and then I still play a one player game...not as much anymore.

Very true. I will concede then that wii sports is a good game then from the very basic and most important metric that it is fun to play, but i don't think its all that great compared to Super Mario World, which, in my opinon, is THE best launch game ever.

You seem very angry at Nintendo.  :dunno  It goes a little beyond "I think WiiU might be a misstep" to "Nintendo is going to crash and burn bwahh-haha!"  I'm paraphrasing, of course.

I don't really have a horse in this race- if a console has good games, I will buy it, eventually, to experience those games. But Donk isn't the only one wondering these things- I hear it echoed a lot in the games media, which you might dismiss, but I enjoy shows like the Bombcast and Player One Podcast and think they are on top of things. If Nintendo, who most of us love due to nostalgia and some genuinely great gaming experiences, is going to have their biggest console train-wreck yet, I think it is worth bringing up and postulating about.  It would be a pretty big deal in the games industry- just as it was when Sega went a different direction as a company.

^^^ This

Really the WiiU isn't as big of a deal as the 3DS.  I bet if Nintendo had to choose between the two, in terms of which would be succesful, I bet they would pick the 3DS.  Their most succesful franchises are on the portable side - Pokemon eats any other franchise for lunch on the Nintendo side.

I guess we will see.  I think one of the things that I think hurts Nintendo is the controller.  We all bought the wii with the promise that it would change the way that games are played; instead we got a lowered playing experience with motion controls that largely felt like tacked on afterthoughts.  Now here comes Nintendo again harking about how this controller will change the way we play games, its like, okay, I might have fallen for that once, but I am not falling for that again.

$300 sounds about right for the first 6 months with decreases in price over time.

When buying a console, are we supposed to pick 'the winner'? Or just a console that appeals to us? Do I win a prize if I pick the winner?

You are supposed to pick the winner, otherwise you end up like the weirdo who keeps praising how great the wonderswan is.  You get stuck in the alternate reality where everything is based on how great things could be or could have been instead of reality.  Kind of like the reasoning people have when favoring android phones.

Your prize is something that doesn't become an obsolete piece of hardware that you have laying around your house.  oh, and i'll mail you a sticker if you really want

So basically you're saying "I don't want a Nintendo WiiU/3DS so I'm going to make sure that I convince everyone NOT to support Nintendo otherwise I'll have to buy one if it becomes popular because I'm not allowed to make my own gaming decisions, ever."

Actually, how it's supposed to work is you buy the console that you want and enjoy it, all other opinions be damned.  And if you don't enjoy it, sell it (optional) and buy a different one.

If you bought a Wonderswan and sincerely enjoy it, more power to you. If you're trying to tell everyone why the Wonderswan is the best and everything else is crap, then you're labeled an obvious fanboy and no one listens to you anyway.

It's been a three-console race for almost 10 years now; I don't see that changing anytime soon. Don't worry about Nintendo - Sony/Microsoft aren't going anywhere.

Yeah really. If you're worried about your games becoming obsolete, you may as well give up gaming and spend your free time rolling a wooden hope down the hill with a stick instead.

So why not just stop worrying and enjoy the game.   ;)

I'm going to go break out the Commodore 64 and play a few pre-Christmas dinner games.
