Makvision monitor failure

I recently (earlier this week) got my machine all assembled, configured and working.
I was playing/testing it today and after about an hour of continuous play time my Makvision 29" CRT (brand new from suzo) failed.

I heard a very loud pop and smoke came out.

Suzo is closed now, but I wanted to post and see if anyone else has had this happen or heard of this happening. if it was any other part I would be comfortable to get in there with a multi-meter, but since it is a CRT I want to talk to Suzo, first. Last thing I need is a bad CRT and an electric shock.

Pops and smoke occuring before image loss is usually, mmmm, bad. If you don't have the expertise to troubleshoot it, it needs to go back.

I looked at the CRT closer over the weekend. It was a capacitor that blew. C57 on the main board schematic:

Has anyone had this happen before?
Does anyone know what the purpose of this specific capacitor is, by chance?

perhaps it was installed backwards. not entirely hard to do, but easy enough to miss. check and see if the negative on the cap matches up to whats screened on the board. it should have a filled in portion or a dot.

plus, it would work for a while then blow on you. it's job is to help smooth the output of power.

take photos and document it if you decide to fix it.

Lilshawn, what a great response and excellent suggestion - it totally makes sense. I'll give it a look. I should talk to the Suzo tech tommorrow. If I do replace it, i will take pics. I guess I also owe pics of my whole build....

I talked to the tech at Suzo today  - if anyone had questions, they are super nice.
The net-net is that I could replace the capacitor, but the next one will fail as well.
The tech knew exactly what happened (they have seen this before).
I need to remove the CRT, remove the circuit boards and send them in for RMA service repair.
