Picked up my second cabinet...
« on: December 14, 2011, 11:15:01 pm »
Just thought I would show off my latest project, a Frogger machine I picked up off Craigslist:

It's pretty beat up with the lower few inches having notable water damage.

That said, aside from the PCB being gone, it appears to be fairly complete.  It was advertised as a shell, so I figured it would be a good base for my first MAME machine.  However, the screen has no burn, marquee is decent, etc., so I'm toying around with the idea getting a frogger PCB.  I have a lot of work to do on the cab though, so I'm not exactly pressed to make an immediate decision. :D

Oh...the cost?  10 bux and it was 4 miles from my house. :D

Oh for fun... I"m a little confused though, The last picture [removing the laminate], whats going on there? Is that a sectioned patch, or did
you trim off some of the damage?

Yah, in the last pic, I have removed the lower front panel, bottom piece of plywood, and some of the laminate from one side of the machine.  The main focal point is the plywood, as it is the reason I decided to attack the machine - it has some sort of white mold growing on it.  With the machine being in my house, I wanted to take care of that issue right away.  Since that pic was taken, the panel has been scrubbed w/ bleach water and looks pretty good considering.

Spray that crap with a bleach based cleaner ASAP.  Don't take a chance of the spores getting into your HVAC system and spreading throughout the house!

The price is ok (perhaps a bit high for the cab itself), but if the marquee is in good shape, that makes it worth $10 on it's own.  Not sure what I would do with the cab myself.  With the mold situation and my wife allergic, I'd never be able to bring it home.

Take the best side clean it up, patch it, then use it for a template to cut 2, Then replace the bottom with new wood.
It"s lots of work.... but that"s what Jenni would do.

Believe me, that was the first thing I checked off my "to do" list - I wasn't quite expecting to find that much mold in it (though it makes sense).  The stuff cleaned off easily with some bleach water.

As far as the cab goes, I figure that this will be good practice for when I redo the Taito cab (which is seen in the first pic).  I have never worked with MDF or particle board, so there won't be much to lose if I mess this up.  I'm quite certain that the damage to the machine would have caused it to be sledgehammer fodder for most people.  :P

Just thought I'd drop in a quick update, to indicate that I think I may have saved it.

Stripped of it's woodgrain & cut down 6.5 inches:

New wood!

And a closeup of the repaired section (front panel is just sitting there @ the moment):

I'm quite pleased & look forward to working on a somewhat more solid frogger!  I'll start a regular build thread going in the "projects" section when I make some notable progress. :D
