New info: 21" Dell monitor is blurry....how to fix it?
« on: September 18, 2003, 03:52:12 pm »
My company just tossed a 21" Dell monitor which does not work.   I just put it into my car and was not smart enough to see why it does not work (ie: no picture, no power, etc...) before loading it in the trunk.  :P

Anyway, when I get home and plug the monitor in and it does not power up or it powers up but no picture, then is there hope for me fixing this .... or is it in fact junk?

Any ideas as to what to look for or how to approach this would be appreciated.

My friend had this with a 17" gateway monitor.  The problem ended up being a fuse, however the fuse was in a heavily marked caution area so he decided not to swap it.  It cost alot to have someone else fix it too.

So basically....get a "friend" to swap the fuse for me ?   :o

Kidding aside, how would I test whether the problem is the fuse?  What was the symptom your friend was having with his 17" Gateway (ie: power up, blank screen, etc..)?

  • Resistance is... probably a good idea.

Not powering up is consistant with a blown fuse. Pull the fuse and test it with a circuit tester. Just be sure to discharge the monitor first, and you'll be alright. You can find info on discharging it in the monitor forum (where this question should really be).  ;D

Did not even realize there was as monitor forum.  If someone could move this message over there, that would be great.

Is finding the fuse pretty easy?

Should look like a fuse, so it shouldn't be that hard to find. Just discharge and you should be fine.

New Info: 21" Dell monitor is blurry... How to fix?
« Reply #6 on: September 21, 2003, 03:08:03 pm »
OK, I finally got the 21" Dell monitor home which my company tossed and plugged it in to see what was going on.   I turned it on and was pleasantly surprised when the monitor displayed a nice crisp/clear image.   However, right before I was going to call my wife over and show her the good deal I got, the display turned completely blurry.

What is going on and how can I fix this?  Or should I simply toss the monitor into the garbage (where I found it)?

Gradually turned blurry?  or all of a sudden snapped from normal to blurry?

I think there's something in there for focusing the electron beam.  I haven't opened a screen in so long I couldn't even try to tell you where it is, but it may be something as simple as replacing a pot, or turning a screw, or redoing a bad solder joint.

It very well could be the color convergence.  Bad convergence settings can make you monitor look totally blurry.  Mess around with the OSD and see if you can find how to adjust those settings.

I believe it suddenly goes from clear to blurry.

Would the convergence be the problem if the screen was once crystal clear, but then goes to blurry?  I believe this problem is related to something more than adjusting some monitor display settings since it was once clear.

What does OSD stand for?

Is it clear when turned on then goes blurry or is it now blurry all the time?    If it is clear when turned on and goes bad it might be a component that has a heat problem or a solder joint that is bad and does not show up untill it warms up and expands.

OSD is on screen display and probably not relavent to this sort of problem.
