Newbie - Just picked up a Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles cabinet!
« on: December 08, 2011, 02:53:30 am »
All,

I am totally new to all of this so please bare with me..

I have just picked up a fully working Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles JAMMA based arcade machine. My long term goal is to setup a PC running MAME and hook it up to the machine via a J-Pac.

On a different note... I know nothing about the internal components of the machine and want to give it a clean.. Can anyone point me to anything helpful about the internals? Possibly a diagram or something?

I wanted to use a can of compressed air to clean the dust from inside the machine. But it would ideally be nice to understand what all the parts inside are actually for!! :-)

Thanks!
Dean

I doubt you will find that much in there, it's normally the display, arcade board, PSU and control panel (speaker and light too) the only diffences are normally how well the previous owners/operators treated is with repairs etc, some cabs can be a right bodge of cables.

Sometimes a paintbrush can be better for cleaning, but even with the compressed air I would have a vacuum on as well to catch all the dust you are removing.

Thanks for the tips. The paintbrush sounds like a good idea. There are a few cobwebs in there!!

To be fair when I opened the machine, all of the cables are very neat and tidy.

I am really after an overview on what exactly is what in the machine. Any diagrams or documentation anywhere?

you must be in the UK, they are ninja turtles on this side of the pond.

You get an original cabinet? The one with the turtles and April on the side?

You should be able to find a manual on it with no problem. Though the manual will probably say Ninja Turtles rather than Hero. Try www.arcarc.xmission.com

For clean up, the paintbrush, canned air and vacuum should do fine, just be careful not allow any of the liquid propellant of the canned air to spray on the boards

What's the little green one got in your version since he can't have numbchunks?

I believe other than the title screen and intro song, the games are the same.

I looked at the wikipedia....

Quote
However, when the live-action movie came out in 1990, the "Ninja" of the title was kept even in the UK. In time, nunchaku scenes were retained in previously-censored movies such as those of Bruce Lee. The same went for the PAL releases of the early video games, which had Michelangelo's weapon of choice fully visible and usable.

I guess you could fire up the ROM in MAME and see?

So ninjas were banned in England?

Yes I am in the UK and the word 'Ninja' was always censored out of the title credits in the cartoon. I think it was apparently too violent.. so they went for Hero instead!

As a kid in the UK I always knew the Turtles as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, until the movie was released with Ninja in the title.

There is no difference at all in the game content.

So ninjas were banned in England?

I recall it was the depiction of certain weapons?  Seems like the cartoon title sequence had some stuff clipped out, too.  England bans all kinds of random stuff because their people are too fragile to handle it.

That and the word ninja is synonymous with violence, according to the brits of the era. They even changed the song title too, which I think is stupid because they replaced the word ninja with fighting. Like thats any less violent.  ::)

All,

Thanks for the advice so far. I have 2 questions...

1. I need to move the machine into another room, however the 'control panel' platform/playing area is too wide and ideally needs to come off for me to get it through our interior door frames. Is this easy enough to do?

2. I have noticed a small circle on the screen display, right in the middle of the screen which is present at all times. It kind of looks like screen burn would do on an LCD screen... any ideas? It is nothing major, but I swear it wasn't there a few days ago when I last played the machine.

BTW this is the machine I have:

Thanks!

That CP is removable.  You need to get access to the inside of the cabinet and/or CP and you should be able to remove it.  CP's are generally held on with either bolts or clips.  Once you get in there, it should be obvious what needs to be removed.

Thank you. I will take a look today.

Any comments regarding this 'screen burn'? It is a circle shape right in the middle of the screen. It is very faint, but noticable... :-(

Just a safety tip if you are cleaning.  Avoid the anode cap (looks like a suction cup on the monitor).  Actually be very careful with all of the monitor, particularly the red wires.
