Neo Geo Minimum Specs
« on: September 18, 2003, 11:15:36 am »
I'm toying with a new Bartop Mame project, since I've already got a fullsize cab running Mame and 13 other emulators, this would be a stripped down version.

I would like to be able to put some of the NEO GEO games on there (I don't need all of the titles, but I have fun with many of them).

I've built a cab off of a 600 Mhz machine with 128 MB of Ram and it could run most of the NEO GEO games.  I don't know how low I can go though.

Since money doesn't grow on trees, I see that Ebay has some good deals in 450 Mhz machines with 64 MB of ram.  Has anyone had any luck with NEO GEO games on a machine with similiar specs?  Again, I don't need all of them and I realize some wouldn't run properly, but that's OK with me since this a secondary machine.

Any feedback appreciated.

I've got an AMD 500Mhz machine with 128 MB... It runs the Metal Slugs and the scrolling shooters (Aero Fighters) type games without a problem.

I don't play too many of the other Neo-Geo games though...
Which games are you thinking of?
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

yeah, the majority of the neogeo games are playable on a PIII500.  Use a different emulator like nebula or kawaks.  Mame doesn't use any acceleration and it doesn't handle transparencies.

Best game to show the difference, sdodgeb in attract mode.  Runs at 7fps in mame on my machine, almost full rate in kawaks.

My buddy runs the Metal Slugs on a PII 350 with 384 megs of ram (and a 64meg video card) with no trouble. If the screen gets super crazy then yes, it slows down some but it's still very playable.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

333mhz celeron w/256mb of ram, basically the key to this thing is to use NeoRageX, or pick up NeoRage0.8c from anigames, not gonna put the url up but you can find it.  Kawaks and Nebula will run them faster than mame will, but NeoRageX for purely neo geo games is the best way to go by far.

You could get by with a very slow computer using neoragex.  My Pentium 3 650mhz with only 64mb of ram can run pretty much any neo geo game in neoragex.

Slowdowns in neogeo games such as metal slug or last resort have not to do with lack of your computer's cpu speed, but with lack of the emulated cpu speed. This can be fixed by overclocking the emulated cpus. It will demand some extra power from your computer but it's worth!
