Convert gun arcade to mame
« on: December 04, 2011, 06:24:31 pm »
Hello, I would like to convert my current gun arcade over to mame. How do I go about hooking up the guns to the computer? I was thinking of getting a j-pac or an i-pac. Is that the way to go? This is a jamma cab and there are 2 light guns.

-Thanks

Depends on what type of light guns you have.   Arcade to mame has not had a good track record to date.

I have no idea what guns they are. There is nothing written on them at all. It was an original virtua cop 2 cab that has been converted to area 51. I'd like to convert it to mame.

Pics of the guns would help.

I'd guess they're Happ guns.

And, unless you change the electronics inside the guns, there isn't much success in using them with mame.

The AIM-Trak Light Gun Module from Ultimarc is what you need. Assuming that they will fit in the gun housings you have (i.e. replace the original sensors).

There is a kit that is supposed to convert original arcade guns for use on PC's that HAPP sells.  I don't think anyone has reported success with this kit.  There was a lot of interest in the board, but since it was $200, I don't think anyone here bought it.  I do think there was a thread in the last 3-6 months that someone discussed one of these boards they picked up off ebay.  As I recall, it didn't work very good for their installation.

If you want to use the unaltered arcade guns today, I think that board is your only option.

What about using a playstation 1 or playstation 2 gun and have it hooked up via usb to my computer in the cab. Anyone know if those are compatible with mame? They seem to be a lot cheaper and that's why I ask.
