JAMMA harness: identify these wires
« on: November 23, 2011, 01:29:30 pm »
Hello everyone!

I've been wiring a cabinet with a new JAMMA harness.  The cabinet was formerly a SNK Ikari Warriors machine, with some really horrible custom adapter board connecting the SNK PCB to the controls.

For the most part I've been able to figure out where everything goes, and the JAMMA wiring loom manufacturer clustered like-wires together with zip ties.

However the two remaining wire bundles clusters I am a little lost on.
Can anyone give me advice where these go, or even speculations?   ???

bundle "B" here has connections to
  • GND (very long)
  • GND with one additional terminal
  • TEST (orange)
  • SERVICE (red)
  • COIN (green, very long)

there's only one COIN connector for two coin slots.

bundle "C" here has connections to
  • speaker + and - (white, long, no terminals)
  • COIN (green, very long) - another one!
  • P2 BUTTON 4? this is pin c (grey).  If I connect this one somewhere, will P2 no longer be able to use BUTTON 4?
  • GND (black, with a plug, zip-tied to another plug with 2 terminals)

Where do these pieces go?

What is with the extra connections, like the GND plugs?

Why are there two different connections for COIN, which connect to the same part of the JAMMA connector?

Any input would be appreciated!

Trace the wires back the jamma connector, should all be self-explanatory. Take a look at this pinout:

Where do these pieces go?
- Speaker + and - goes to your single speaker (Jamma is mono sound)
- Jamma standard has 2 coin connections for two coin chutes
- button 4 "pin c" would primarily be used for Neo Geo. Capcom used a separate Kick (or auxiliary) harness.

- There should be multiple GND's.. a couple for the P1 and P2 controls.  Some for board power, video ground, etc...

If they're wired to the same pin, perhaps the previous owner wanted either chutes wired to a credit up.

Take a look at Bob Robert's Jamma hook-up page. Has a lot of information on Jamma and how to cleanly hook 'em up.

Thanks opt2not, I have a JAMMA pinout, that is how I know what each of these wires are.

Maybe I should rephrase the question:

I have these wires.  These SPECIFIC wires.
They seem to be clustered together for a reason!

What is the reason?  Where do they go?
Your diagram actually has less information that what I started with.

You'll notice I did not ask what to do with the GND for the player controls.
I didn't ask what to do with the power wires.
That is because I connected them already.
I've connected the video RED GREEN BLUE SYNC and GND.

To put this in your perspective:
According to your diagram, there are two wires running out of Player 2 Neo Geo D.
Why do you suppose that is?

Incidentally, this Neo-Geo diagram also doesn't have TILT, SERVICE, or RESET/TEST, which are part of the JAMMA standard and are on my loom.

Thanks in advance!

Your first bundle looks like service and test but the second bundle looks like whatever was left.

I love how new members come to the forum asking for help with unclear questions, then when that help is given they become snarky at the answers.
Oh well.
Good luck to you.

sorry for this off-topic derailing, but;
why is "G,H and I" not there on the JAMMA adapter?

you might be right BobA.
But this GND has these plug things on it... maybe there's a type of board or cabinet hardware that uses plugs for grounding.

My thinking overall is: this harness has been sold many, many times for this exact purpose.
So the bundles are specialized for something in particular, maybe even opt2not's Neo Geo machine.
This however may not be the configuration of my cabinet.
If I can avoid it, I don't want to eliminate something that could be useful.

dextercf, on my JAMMA pinout "H" is the key slot.
"I" and "O" are omitted as an industrial standard, because they look like "1" and "0"
It may be "G" is omitted so it doesn't get confused with "Ground"

opt2not;
I apologize if I sounded snarky!   ;D
What part of my question is unclear?
Just so we're on the same page: I am new to this forum.
I am not new to electronics design or maintenance.

Current issues:

Q1: why are there two different COIN connectors, in two separate bundles?

Q2: why is P2 BUTTON 4 split into two contacts?  Why is one of them very long and bundled with the speaker leads?

I think perhaps you are looking too hard here ... what difference does it make why they are bundled this way ?

I presume that these were mass-manufactured to a spec, rather than some guy making concious decisions. There are probably two different coin connectors to account for differing cab designs -- including one where coins/bills are inserted from somewhere near the speakers. Same for the so-called Button 4 -- provides some flexibility in dealing with different games and cabinets.

Nothing to worry about.

When I wired the exact same connector I cut off lots of wires that were not needed for a regular jamma installation.  I think they try to make the wiring suit all configurations possible and alot of the extra grounds etc are not needed.  Just take what you need and junk the rest.

Q1: Some games use more than one coin slot, one for each player. Your factory made harness might be made to accommodate this.

Q2: I had this in a cabinet I bought brand new from China as well and was curious about it. I did some searching for an answer and found that it's wired to support Non-JAMMA (95% JAMMA) NEO-GEO motherboards.

Quote from: www.hardmvs.com
Q: What about the other boards?
A: The 2, 4, and 6 slot boards are wired to what I would call the MVS standard. It is almost the same as JAMMA, but have the additional 4th button, a select button, and Stereo sound out of the harness instead of an external connector. The test switch is also in a different location than the JAMMA test switch.

^^Does this sound plausible?
