Finding Auction Prices for Used Games (Derby Owners Club)
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:53:39 pm »
I ended up in a weird/lucky situation, a friend of mine owns a few bars and recently picked up a local establishment that went out of business years ago.  He doesn't do arcade games, only billiards, darts, and golden tee in his places.  The latest place he picked up has a bunch of games, including a 4-player horseshoe Derby Owners Club World Edition which I personally dropped a bunch of money on in my day.  He said the other night he was willing to sell it, he has no use for it, so I am trying to find a good price to offer for it.  It is pretty old, and a little beat up, not even sure how good the working condition is, it has been sitting for a while...I will have to test it out.  Being a huge fan of the game and a minor collector of arcade games, this would be a great pickup for my basement/game room.

My question, is there a way to find out recent used/auction prices of arcade games anywhere?  I tried a based google search of "Derby Owners Club" and auction results, but didn't get any good, real data to get a price that is fair to both of us.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Anthony

It is definitely beat up, and has been sitting for 18-24 months... so I still have to test working order.  I can find a refurbed one on Craigslist in KC for $2500... so I am going based on that being like new.  I think I will offer in the sub 1K range.

How did we get from 800-1000 to 1250 being a good deal ?

Mac sounds like someone we would all like to sell too.

 ;)

A couple of things -- if you are going to test, don't offer before testing. If you are going to offer without testing, adjust down accordingly. Also, this is a big ass piece of equipment -- make sure it will fit in your basement and remember that the big stuff often goes for less at auction because nobody wants to haul it away.

Thanks for the advice guys... I'm going to try stay under 1K.  He doesn't want to go through the hassle of auctioning, and is a good friend, so I'm trying to make it good for both of us.  I checked the dimensions, it fits in my basement fine...getting it the basement will be fun :)

I'll update if it works out ;)

If he's a friend, he would just give it you! He has no use for it.

Auctions take a cut of the sale.  He'll lose ~1/3 of the value to the auction house right off the bat assuming he gets the price he wants.  Just keep that in mind when making the offer.  If he sold it for $1000 at auction, he'd only get ~$6-700 after auction and transportation fees.  Plus, as you said, it's probably a hassle.

HOLY S...is that really what it looks like!?

I assume that's a large setup and this one is only 1 of those systems?  If not, that thing is HUGE!

an older one of those DOC racing setups was sold earlier this year at an arcade closing auction in fayetteville, NC that had 8 or twelve player stations. each station was more of an individual square machine and the screen was a projection screen.  I didn't stay long enough to see what the setup went for or I would be happy to let you know the auction price.  They auctioned a 4 lane bowling alley setup and a big ass fully enclosed flight sim as well.

Thats the 8 player version with the 80"+ screen... almost 1200lbs :)    I am picking up a 4-player version this weekend.  Much smaller (but still big....)   Its called "horseshoe edition".  4 satellite stations that can be broken apart individually, 60" screen.

http://www.coinopexpress.com/products/machines/sport_games/Derby_Owners_Club_-_Horseshoe_Edition_5625.html

We agreed on a good price, I am going to measure it out this weekend to see how big of a trailer/uhaul I will need.  I'll post some pictures when it makes its way to my house early next week.

Thanks for all the insight everyone

Anthony

:Edit:

Since I know this is the next question asked, the pricing is more of an agreement depending on the condition of the unit, if its in full working order we are in the $600 range... if not, it goes down from there depending what is wrong (individual stations vs screen).
