3.0 vs. 3.2 ghz for MAME?
« on: November 13, 2011, 11:17:21 am »
I have a dilemma, but I really just need to know one thing... Would anything become playable with a 3.2 ghz AMD Athlon II x2 that wouldn't be playable on a 3.0 ghz Athlon II x2?

Actually, I think I am being dumb about this. I probably should just go with the 3.0 ghz. If I buy that one, it is a computer already built and running with a 1.5 terabyte hard drive, where as if I did the 3.2 ghz, it would be 10$ more, I would have to build it myself, and it would only be a 120 GB hard drive. (hard drives have gotten expensive!)

extremely doubtful. In the modern era, 200mhz is somewhat negligible from what i have seen. A few frames per second at best. If however you are in the market for a new build, i would just go with the 3.2 depending on the price.

.2 ghz is not going to make or break the mame install.  Whatever is unplayable at the lower speed will also be unplayable at the higher speed.  It takes a big jump to change this.

You'll see a lot more differences based on the version of MAME you are using, OS, and other variables than .2ghz on the CPUs noted.  If you use 64 bit Windows try some of the 64 bit versions of MAME and you'll notice a major speed up.

I'll echo what everyone else here has echoed. When you're in the GHz range, .2GHz increase over 3.0 is less than 7% bump in speed. At the absolute best, you're going to get a 7% bump in performance and that doesn't happen in real world applications.

Well, when I went to go pick up the computer, I found out that it is actually 2.7 ghz dual core, but I got it anyways. So far I am happy with it. I can't play all the Tekken games which is a little disappointing, but I am not sure if that is something that most computers handle or not.

install a PSX emulator and use the console versions of Tekken.

The Cave SH3/CV1000 games added a few months ago then redisabled recently in MAME. Machines above 3.0ghz are pretty much required for them to play at full speed.
