WTB - CP Hinge (Blacksburg, VA)
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:17:59 pm »
Hi all, looking to purchase a hinge for my CP.  Need a piano hinge, at least 23" long, if longer i can cut it down.  Looking for the full wrap around style that can fit onto 3/4" wood.  Mainly I want to install the hinge so the only thing you see is the edge and no screws.  Found some on rockler but trying to avoid paying $30+shipping for one hinge.

PM Me with price, shipped to 24060 if you can help.

Thanks

Have you tried a local hardware store?  Lowes and Home Depot both carry them.

i looked at both of those but all i could find were standard piano hinges, none with the ninety degree bend on both sides to wrap over the edge and screw into the inside.

I'm not sure I can visualize what you mean.  Can you post a link so I can see a picture please?

Maybe I got lucky but I think I have what you mean on my control panel.  Maybe not though.  :dunno

Gotcha.  I thought it was something like that but wasn't sure.  I don't have that, sorry.

I did see a lot of piano hinges on Amazon but they were supplied from Rockler.  Free shipping since it's over $25 so that could help.

I have some euro-cabinet hinges which may do what you want, but are drastically different than the piano hinge. Not this exact model but similar: http://www.knobsandhardware.com/cabinet-hinges/laury-10200-laurey-half-overlay-european-cabinet-hinge_g185592.html?af=1527&cse=1527&gclid=CLnSj-nluKwCFYqA5QodsjHAHQ If you think they will work for you, I'll sell them to you for $1 apiece.  I have 30....

I'm in Blacksburg, so it's a cheap alternative if it will work for you.

You shouldn't need that piano hinge with the 90' bend in it.

Just mount the hinge differently. You might have to route out a little recess on the top edge of the CP box back, and the underside of the CP at the back, but that should be it.

Alternately, you could use set of standard kitchen cabinet hinges.

You might also consider picking up a gas strut to keep the lid open, but you could also use a casement window adjuster or just a stick.

There are a ton of the euro hinges at lowes

http://www.lowes.com/SearchCatalogDisplay?Ntt=blum+hinge&storeId=10151&N=0&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&rpp=48

Yeah, but not at $1 apiece.  They are WAY more expensive at Lowe's.  And I got these so you can easily remove the top if you want.

Dirk...thanks a bunch, however i had already tried euro hinges, i was able to get some from harbor freight on sale.

DrAdventure, In regard to not needing the 90 bend, i do, i have built a repro cab, pacman style and want to hinge the control panel out.  Its not just the top, but the front and top together that I want to lay out, but need the 90 to attach to the back sides of the front of the cab and cp.  I will attempt to do some ascii art...:)

        _______________ ----------top of cp
          |
          |--------------front of cp,hinge to have cp layout to the front and over (note the front leans forward some at an angle that's not shown)
            |
            |------------------------------------------------Front of cab

Hmm I +think+ I understand what you'r looking for

Like this:

-----------------------------------
|                  (CP Top)
------------------------------------
   |  |
   |  |
   |  |(CP front)
   |  |
   |  |
   |  |(hinge in this corner)
   -----------------------------------
   |                  (bottom)
   ------------------------------------
                |  |
                |  |
                |  | (base of cab)
                |  |
                |  |
                |  |

Detail view of the corner

   |           |
   |           |
   |           |(CP front)
   |           |
   |           |
   |           |
   |_ ------|
       0
   |Ż ------ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
   |
   |                  (bottom)
   |______________________________

(the 0 is the hinge knuckle)

Note that the hinge is inset (via a shallow routed out trench) into both the bottom edge of the Front of the CP, and the top inside of the bottom.
You'd have to bevel the outside lip of the CP front slightly so it would clear properly, but other than that, it'd be pretty straightforward and the hinge knuckle shouldn't have to show.

And then, I might be completely misunderstanding your design too  :)

Can't help with the hinge, but I'm in Roanoke.  Would love to see pics of your cab.

Thanks for your reply.  I'm working on it and taking some pics/video.  I'm working on a large bartop (almost like the top half of a full-size) with detachable CP, rotating monitor, chrome pinball lockbar on CP (with nudge plumb-bob mechanism in CP), etc.  Will be posting a product announcement (hopefully soon); hoping to finish by the end of the summer (which is coming way too soon).  Thanks for your interest and stay tuned.

Cool... look forward to seeing them.  With regard to the "plumb bob", you might want to consider putting it further away from the CP.  I know a bartop doesn't give you the kind of room a pin or regular arcade cab would have, but I think you'll find that it might be a bit sensitive if it's right there in the CP where any rigorous play might set off the tilt alarm.  I thought about putting something similar in my latest project, but it didn't seem worth giving people a reason to beat on my cab.  :hissy:

Hmmm.... you've given me something to think about.  I wanted to put the nudge/tilt assembly in the CP because the CP is detachable and will be often used as a standalone on my living room coffee table hooked up to an old laptop with cable to our main TV.  But I wonder if it'll be too sensitive as you say.  If I try it in the CP, I'll try to mount it so that it can be easily removed if it doesn't work out.  Thanks for your comments/thoughts!

Also, I hear you re: not encouraging others to beat on the cabinet.  I'd probably want the mechanism to be pretty sensitive then.  Well, we'll see.

Right now, my cabinet has finally made it to 3-dimensional stage and is coming along.  I'm a high school teacher and am starting back up full-bore next week, so working against the clock to try to finish it.
